So i was looking into getting a CAI recently and just couldn't justify paying $300+ for such thing. I poked around google and found people using abs plastic for intakes and decided to make my own. Looked and only saw 1 other person did this on there tacoma but it was the 4 cyl.

-used about 3 1/2 ft of abs plastic 3" ID
-relocated the maf to right behind the filter
-sealed the pipe together with black rtv
-also used black rtv on the MAF since it is sensor safe
    -autozone afe filter
-extended fuel pressure regulator vacuum line

Let me know what you think.

pretty innovative, very cool, but tacomas already have superb airflow, I can see you cleaning that filter more excessively and expecting water damage regularly in the future. best of luck to you

It'd suck to do all that work than have the MAF sensor throw a code because the airflow is too turbulent or some other bs your custom job throws at you unexpectedly. I might try finding some flexible rubber tubing joints that'll make it easier to seal the tube between the filter and the butterfly. It'd probably look better with rubber tubing joints to. I'd hate to see any other mods a guy with a cadallac emblem in his scoop would do... That being said good luck and have fun.

Guys pay $300+ to have an intake that looks like it belongs in there truck rather than hooked up to a shitter. Can't blame a guy for trying to save a few bucks though.

I don't know why someone would talk about a blower when you're obviosuly not interested in $$$$ mods. I use a CAI in front of my blower. I like the sound and the filter I went with is IMHO much better than stock. There's as many reasons to do a CAI as there is not too, everyone has a right and wrong reason so do whatever you want and will be happy with.

Don't let the nay-sayers get you down. Looks reasonable, and the price is right. Functionally, should work as well as the manufactured part.

I would recommend that you fabricate up a shield for the front of the filter to keep a heavy rain from throwing a bad MAF reading. You can buy one for about $35, or could bend up some aluminum reasonably cheap. Since your grill is custom, I think that's what I see, the filter has little protection from rain.

    John,

I applaud your efforts Young Sir and you've got a great modding future ahead of you.

Allow me to add to the discussion if I may and make a few suggestions. I've noticed the design you have is rigid, the engine will have a tendency to sway and move. With the weight and rigidity of your current Rev ( or Revision ) the intake will put undue stress on you intake manifold. Specifically where the throttle body mounts to the manifold itself which will develop stress cracks and ultimately fail over time. Particularly if you're out wheeling all the time.

If you design in some strain relief points, such as silicon elbows like this example here . . .2-75-to-3-70mm-76mm-Silicone-90-Degree-E_0c89d3a609ef8b446620f6bd3703f49bcc1c4224.jpgAlso if you were so inclined you could eventually replace all the PVC with Silicon tubing similar to these elbows for even greater flexibility.

John, If I may say so, Outstanding job on relocating the MAF Sensor right behind the filter and sealing it so there are no trouble codes being displayed. There is a perfect filter designed just for this application. The Fujita F5-300s has a specific 'Cone' built right into the top of the air filter. As air is pulled in, air is deflected off of the cone to reduce turbulence greatly. That way as the air is pulled and travels past the MAF the ECU receives good inputs from the MAF and as a result the throttle response is more pronounced and your air/fuel ratio is most accurate . . .
    fujita-air-filter-77-mm-3-inch-f5-300s_05ddf5dea5e5bd9a88dd047a7f2031905c0af526.jpg

And the last suggestion I would make is protecting the pipe itself from the freshly cut metal. Any "C-Strip" trim lock would work in this application to prevent bare metal from eventually sawing into the PVC piping . . .
    3M-BUBBLE-UPVC-WINDOW-DOOR-GASKET-SEAL-W_868fce1bf8bbb4be197b804a6940e8c00d044e0f.jpg

All of these are C.O.T.S. items and can be sourced from Amazon, eBay or random internet supplier.

Have A Great Day Young Sir and keep up with the great ideas ! ! !

And for the rest of negativity around here I would like to recommend a book for you . . .

Just a couple of options, per the above post,,, depends on your budget and where you want to take this.

For the silicone elbows, not sure if it's any cheaper, but Fernco couplers/elbows can be used to help take out some of the vibration.

For the C-strip, you can get some fuel hose and cut it lengthwise, then put it around the sheetmetal cut.

    I never knocked the kid.

He asked why people buy $300+ intakes and the simple answer is because those intakes tend to bolt on simply, look pretty, and work great. Some of us like to show others our mods and, in general, professionally manufactured looks better than a home brew built intake. If he wants to build his own CAI from home plumbing it'll look like home plumbing (which usually connects to a shitter somewhere, take a joke buddy), but that won't necessarily effect performance. Too each his own.

I gave him the same advice as you did to look for some flexible elbows to allow the engine to move without causing cracks that'll defeat the purpose of his setup. Those elbows will also seal better on the corners with clamps rather than using hard elbows and sealant. Another tip I'd give the op is to make sure he cleans off any burs and loose material from the piping after he makes his cuts. You don't want that shit going into you engine. I don't know if I'd go with an oiled filter. Especially an oiled filter so close to the MAF. That's just asking for a fouled MAF if the OP ever accidentally over oils the filter. There are plenty of dry filter options that have superior filtering capabilities without the risk of MAF fouling or under oiling.

As for the leaf blowers, that was directed at rocklobster as a joke. I'd love to see someone pull up with several leaf blower tied to there hood as a "performance mod". If two leaf blowers = 3 hp, than you only need 20+ leaf blowers to get the same performance as a TRD blower right? :D
