Ya I thought so as well, and I think it was pretty fair price for their plans, for only 31dollhairs

Edit: it came with cad files so I can optimize all the pieces on a sheet of metal and just have Jacob the welding guy across the way throw it on his cnc plasma cutter and have it done pronto.

That's not bad, I'd prefer it had a flat face instead of the extra rounded edges.

I need to repaint mine, definitely going to check out some high temp bbq paint. Did you prime it first and if so what kind of primer?

I did. A couple coats of some Krylon grey. Nothing too special.

Beggars can’t be choosers hahaha, that was really the only blueprints I could find for my truck, but I agree that would look cool

True. I guess if the file allows for editing, it wouldn't be too hard to change

    Yep, that's the stuff.

My theory is that being high heat it would be more durable. It's holding up okay so far, but there's definitely a wear spot showing up on my sliders at the driver door. Haven't really bashed them into any rocks yet.

Easy enough to toss another coat or two to patch it up.

It does since it has CAD files, but the owner of the timber-framing shop I work at is helping me optimize all of the parts and pieces from the CAD files, I’m not proficient with auto cad so I would have to learn it or try and communicate everything I want to change to him....would be just a little too much of a hassle. I dont want to take up too much of his time to where I feel I would need to pay him for his time. It took him like 3 minutes to put all the pieces onto a sheet so the welders across the way can cut it for me.

Since this is really the first ‘real’ welding project I will be tackling, I don’t want to go changing things up. If I’m having any issues flatland4x4 will help me figure out what I’m doing wrong, if I change things and have issues I’ll be up $hit creek without a paddle.

For sure. I was just thinking about it. Looks like worst case a guy could just leave those pieces off and cut a flat piece to fit.

I also just noticed that the ends step up like a 2nd/3rd gen bumper. Not really sure that is necessary. I'd just have a flat top all the way across.

You and me both brother, it's good stuff but I discovered the Walmart $1 flat black sticks just as well, drys just as fast and lays on just as evenly but has a more satin finish vs the high temp bbq black

There's an Ace right down the street form me, so quite honestly I just go there and pick up whatever they have. Probably spend more in gas to go to Walmart (it's several miles away) for the cheaper paint, lol.

Alright, I got my prints over to the metal shop, so I’m hoping that they have time to slap it on the Cutting table next week. Then I just need to find the time to weld up the bumper and paint it. I’ll take photos of the weld up and post them when I get it all done:thumbsup:

Well The welding shop didn’t pan out, want to charge me a ridiculous amount and now I’m on a different path for cutting the bumper. I’m gonna go a different route.

I have a question, should I buy 3/16in cold rolled steel or hot rolled steel for my bumper?or does it matter? I’m gonna just layout and cut by myself, will take a bit longer but will cost me far less.

Whatever's cheaper cold rolled is what machining guys use since they have true 90 degree edges and are pretty straight and true

whereas hot rolled steel may have minor surface imperfections

Cold rolled is better steel but hot rolled is better suited for price and application

I’d pay more for cold rolled - hot rolled has a thick scale you’ll have to remove if you want it to look good and definitely have to remove anywhere you’re welding. I’ve worked with both and much prefer cold rolled.

Interesting all through highschool welding class I and everyone else welded through scale just fine, it wasn't till we started bend testing that I started cleaning it off, it's easy enough to hit where you're going to weld with a flap disk if you care that much

Different schools of thought - I mean you can weld through rust, paint, and scale, but most fab shops would clean everything to shiny bright metal and reduce the likelihood of inclusions. I'd clean up cold rolled along the edges if it's getting rusty too, but the thick scale will be obvious once you paint unless you don't care about the looks. I like working with cold rolled in other aspects like cutting too - can't remember how many feet of 3/16 and 1/4 on my truck I've cut with a 4.5" grinder and cold rolled feels better - hot rolled is kind of like fudge and cold rolled is like, well, harder feeling even if it's probably not "harder" in a strength of materials meaning.
