I've searched all over this site for the best possible location to actually cut the exhaust. The search was pretty broad, personal preference really, and figured I'd post the way I did it... which I know this is basic shit for most of you, but it can't hurt and looks clean. No sound difference (wasn't expecting it).
    1. I cut mine right after the axle with a sawzall. There are hangers on both my driver and passenger sides about 8" back, so it doesn't hurt losing one hanger.
    2. Cut 2 notches at the top of the pipe, slightly bending that little portion upward. Once you get the exhaust tip on, bend it upward more. It will act somewhat as a "set-screw". It's a little hard to see in my photos, but it's a good idea to do this. It's like a secondary connection. I wouldn't want to be driving 80MPH down the highway and have my exhaust tip fly off and hurt anyone.
    3. Once I got bolt fairly tight, I rotated it and pushed the tab back down a little. Now it is tight, and cannot rotate one way for sure. I will check the exhaust tip in a few days again. I don't drive farther than 2 miles each way to work.
This is a stock exhaust tip that came with my SR5. It's a pretty solid tip, and isn't like the pieces of junk that have little screws.

Glad I did this too, it's much cleaner all around. I felt like I noticed my exhaust first and foremost, vs my entire truck itself.

Great writeup. Is it necessary to replace to exhaust tip? It's under the truck and no one will see it.

Looks good. I will be doing the same because my stock exhaust is resting against my oversized spare.

Great write up. I’ve been wanting to do this. I did it to both my 1st gens and it made the truck louder. Good to hear it doesn’t on the 2nd gens. I’m not going to add a tip though.

Thanks all. It's not necessary to put it back on. Only reason I did, is I see used Tacoma exhaust tips eeeeverywhere, so I know I won't sell it. And it looks nicer than a cut piece of exhaust piping. It also gave me freedom to adjust how far I want the exhaust to sit past my lines and spare.

@tacoma2g, how has this worked out for you? I like the idea, but I’m a little hesitant to chop without some long term feedback.

I had zero issues and was glad I did it. Cleared up my bottom end!

I did reinstall the exhaust tip though, aesthetic purposes when I was under the truck mostly. I'm pretty pick about stuff like details.

Nothing wrong with attention to detail. We've got trucks that are worth giving a sh!t about.

I'm gonna hassle @EatSleepTacos about possibly getting my exhaust tip reinstalled when the time comes to chop.
