I was just thinking about doing this today on my 2013 Double Cab Short Bed simply because 5' bed length isn't long enough for a 6' person to sleep. I would have purchased the long bed however the length of the short is more than long enough as is. Would love to know if this project was ever finished and to what the outcome was.

I realize there are tent covers that go over back of truck for those sleeping in bed which give them addition of tailgate and cover for rain however they look tacky to say the least. Must not be too many people sleeping in their trucks or I would think this would be a common problem.

    hahaha!

I am all about tent camping and also do a bit of backpacking. Last trip I carried my tent on a 60 mile trek on the Benton Mackaye so its not simply because I am lazy. I generally avoid public campgrounds and sometimes it is nice just to be able to sleep in the back of the truck such as arriving to a remote location after driving 4-5 hours after work and or pouring down raining. I have slept in passengers seat but wasn't all that comfortable.

I agree, I like to avoid campgrounds and sleep in the back of my truck sometimes.

Both are Stock - built correct from the start.
Tht removal of the back of the cab was really big in the early/mid eighties. With a topper it turned the mini into a economical "love machine".
Most I saw were lowered street trucks. I had a couple of friends who cutout theirs with no after problems. As others have noted Toyota brought out the Trekker. It was built on a shortbed truck aftermarket for Toyota. It was like a mini Blazer. I wanted one but could never find one. Remember pre-internet days.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Cut a large hole in the tail gate so you can stick your feet through. :)

Op, dont get discouraged by the naysayers. Do what you want. If it were me, id put a roll bar in the area where the brace used to be. Just around the sides and roof, and maybe the bottom. with a bit of gusseting for some extra support. Nothing that would hinder walking thru. A buddy of mine did this to a extended cab mid eighties nissan pickup back in the late nineties. His was all for speakers though.. Good luck if you go through with it, and post some pics..
