Hear you go. Rebuilding CVs is really easy. The only thing I recommend is for you to buy or have REALLY GOOD snap ring pliers and rubber gloves it will same you a lot of time. I have Channel Lock ones and they are the best on the market.

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/lo...5-long-travel-information-14.html#post5207783

This is for a 2nd gen swapping longer axles but its the same process to rebuild and reboot them.

You shouldn't have too much trouble rebuilding a CV AXLE if you have the right tools. Make sure you have them on hand BEFORE you start the project.

You can get the snap ring pliers I use on my truck and the race car from Home Depot for $25

Also Toyota OEM boots are the best boots to use. They are the thickest out there and the boot kits will come with GREAT grease for them. A boot kit is $40 from Toyota. The main thing to look at when rebuilding them is to see if they are deep groves in the race. If there isn't then clean them really good repack them and put them back on the truck.

Personally if I saw boot kits at Toyota for $40, and I know I can buy a lifetime entire axle from Advance for $60-70, I am going to get the entire axle. Just sayin.

Yeah thats what most people do. But then they are getting a lower quality product then the OEM CV joints unless he buy referb ones. With my truck is doesn't matter anyway because my CV axles are like your guys anyways. I have Tacoma outer Berfields, Tundra shafts and Tundra inner berfields with OEM outer boots and Porsche 930 bates style inner boots. I'm just suggesting if he rebuilds them this is the route to go. Boot Kits are $40 per side.

Are they though? Has their been some sort of stress test or something? I'm curious to see or hear why you think this is
(I'm not saying you are wrong).

Go over to ttrora and yotatech or pirate4x4 there is plenty of reading over there. Like I said they will work but there is a reason why people buy referb ones at the higher price or rebuild their. I could see why most people here won't pull theirs apart. Its messy as hell and is about the same price as a Duralast one from Autozone. Also most people have never even opened on so they don't know what they are looking at or looking for as wear marks.

Only ones I could find were these: http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-202959148/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&keyword=snap+ring&storeId=10051

are those what you are using?

I NEED a better set then the harbor freight cheapo's I have. The thicker snap ring on the bottom of the tulip is what hold me up everytime.

I agree stick with Toyota rebuilds if you wheel at all. If your just a mall runner Vatozone lifetime's are for you.

The only other CV's that have proven some worth are the ones from rockauto. But if I have a chance to rebuild a toyota CV I'll pick that one everytime.

    Will do. Thanks.

The "if you wheel at all" e-wiener reference already? TW moves fast! ;) :D

I'll have to look at rockauto too.

No i'm using these. They sell them at all the HDs here but not listed online. I had matco's and snap-ons and they sucked these are great. I've used them on CV axles, Uniball clips, wheel bearing clips and small snap rings on Ratchets when I rebuilt mine.

LOL, I just mean if you wheel your gonna wanna stay toyota. Lots of mall crawlers on here that only wanna look pretty. (which there's nothing wrong with at all) So in their case it makes sence to stay the less expensive route.

The cardone select, (I believe is the name) are the ones on Rockauto that napa resells for $100 with a warranty. Some ttora, pirate, and yotatech searches show people running them with decent results. Some are from people running a front locker which is gonna destroy any CV if your not carefull and practice when and when not to use the skinny pedal LOL.

    Amaes,
Thanks! I'm gonna have to pick a pair up, I have a couple of spares I'm gonna need to rebuild in the near future

Where can I purchase rebuild OEM? I was looking at the axles on RockAuto.com but thought they were similar to the Auto Zone axles.

I would much rather replace my current ones as I dont think Ill have the time to rebuild. When I get around to it, I def want an extra pair when wheeling.

    Edit: Found these guys: http://www.cvjreman.com/axles.php

Missed the group buy by 6 months :(.

Rockauto has the. At one selects which have gotten decent reviews. Just put a set in my dads 4runner so time will tell.

Otherwise they also sell reman's as well. Like $100 and change or something.

I have used the aftermarket CV axles for plenty of my off-road trucks, from mild to harder, and have never had any more of a problem than with OEM. So far, out of 4 trucks, I have only had 2 replaced axles fail on the hard core rigs, and those had some miles on them. Just my opinion and personal experience.
