CV axle dust shield?

After replacing my first ever CV axle a few weeks ago I noticed where I may have made a mistake. The outter part that goes into the wheel hub appears to be missing something after looking at the side I didn't touch. After reading on here I believe is a cover or seal to keep dust and dirt out of the front wheel bearing.

Would it be a bad idea to use silicone or similar sealant in that spot until the CV goes again, and it will eventually go again being that its a REMAN unit from NAPA. Was I supposed to take the old one off the busted CV axle I removed and reuse it? Trying to spare myself further headaches. Thanks.

There are two dust shields. If your remans didn't come with them then you would have needed to install and yes, if you decide it's not worth the trouble then you will need new CV's/wheel bearings sooner and you can end up with leaking diff fluid if its the inner one.

 

Thank you! It's just the side that goes into the wheel portion. I wonder if silicone would work short term

On moving parts, I doubt any of that will last long at all. Just buy the correct parts and replace before you drive through a rain storm. Those seals protect your wheel bearings from water contamination.

 

That would be smarter. It's more the dusty logging roads I run during summer. That fine powder gets EVERYWHERE.

 

Ace Hardware. I used it to make a o-ring seal for a temporary fix for a broken u-joint seal. It's VERY strong and works... even on moving parts. Been on there for a couple years now with zero issues. For a quick temporary fix the stuff is amazeing... great item to carry in the truck for emergencies.
