I’m trying to install NAPA axles (PN 948959) which is a confirmed fit for 1st gen tacomas with manual hubs, but as you can see below they won’t go into the hubs far enough to get a snap ring on.

The axle shield fully contacts the dust shield on the spindle and the cv is fully seated in the front diff.

Is this the wrong axle or am I doing something wrong?

Did the cv axle go in all the way, as in it clicked into the diff end?

They're pretty much the same as far as it goes with the exception of how they’re held in place at the end.

If it's not completely seated, you won't be able to get that lock ring on/off.

However, I'm sure its done so with the hub assembly off...not on.

Whatcha want to try is to thread a flange bolt into the end of the CV and pull/pry to see if you can get another mm or two of slack for the snap ring. Some axles are more difficult than others.

It's not the most convenient to try and pull the CV outwards and push the snap ring on but I've done several.

Did the axles come with new rings? I've also had issues with OEM snap rings being too thick for aftermarket axles, even on premium ones like RCVs.

Little late now but did you compare the old one to new?

Yes, I pull on the cv axle by the head of it and it won’t budge. It also makes a nice thud sound when i try to push it in.

Yeah here are some of my old pics I kept; I remember needing the hub assembly off to gain access.

    20191002_101305.jpg

The ring goes on the cv axle before the hub assembly goes back on.

This is the last part of my 4wd conversion so there are no axles to compare to unfortunately.

What is the overall length? I'm wondering if you got 89-95 IFS CVs

It does! new snap ring and a long bolt that threads into the axle. I’ll try to pull on the bolt to show the snap ring slot.

Interesting...that bolt doesn't have a washer like the factory style.

Maybe it is the wrong cv axle like @Wulf mentioned

If it's the correct cv axle, my bet is that he just needs to remove the hub assembly in order to put on the snap ring.

Here's a pic before having taken off the assembly...you can see how little of the cv axle end is exposed just like above.

    20190926_151907.jpg

Undo nuts until flush with studs.

Hit stud/nut to pop off cone washers.

Do so for all of them and remove.

Pull up hub assembly and now you'll have access to the snap ring.

Napa website says 24.02” compressed, actual is 25” uncompressed.

Thanks @Kwikvette and @Wulf for your solutions and for helping me complete my 4wd conversion.

Also decided to put the OEM tooth washer and bolt w/ washer back in instead of that black bolt cause it looks cooler :D

Glad to see it taken care of!

I was like...I knew the assembly seemed off. Good thing I kept my old pics.

That bolt at the end is nice to have, but not required as it's a back up to that ring failing.

Please use new gaskets, especially the o-ring that goes on the dial!
