Why are you looking to replace them?

If you're just looking to "upgrade" them, sorry to say there isn't much of an option for that. There are a few companies I think that have chromoly axles, but the CVs themselves are still essentially OEM.

I could be wrong on that, but I'm betting if uber strong CVs exist, they're 1) spendy and 2) at least for me, I'd rather the CV be the weak point (pretty easy to replace on the trail) rather than something like the diff.

It also depends on what you'll be doing with it. If you off-road a lot and expect to snap a few here and there, you can always buy some NAPA ones or something - the ones with the lifetime replacements - and just keep those on hand until you break one. Replace it on the trail, then get a new spare.

If just your boot is ripped, you can just replace the boot (~$10 for a boot), although you should really rebuild them (assume dirt and grit has gotten in there).

Although I see a lot of people just replace them since it's way easier to replace the whole thing, and the parts are pretty cheap. You can get them on rockauto for like $50, maybe less. Napa ones are maybe $70(?).

I would definitely keep at least one of the originals as a spare, and rebuild them, too.

I just replaced mine with this part number from NAPA: NMD 944019

Mine started popping and I have had them for 3 years now so not surprised they needed to be swapped out.

Napa ones work fine. Just don't ever use NAPA ball joints is all I can say ;)

I had a napa LBJ one one side and a 555 on the other. The 555 boot ripped and went bad and NAPA one was still good. I replaced both this weekend (replaced napa one because I just figured I would replace both at the same time).

The napa one I had completely separated on me. Popped out of socket. Wrecked my axle shaft and sent my tire into my fender. I think it was a manufacture defect but with all things - the price of them has gone up and the quality has gone down. I had some old Moog Ball joints on a 76 Bronco. I had some serious herspers in this beast and never had any ball joint problems. I even jumped the damn thing. Granted - the 1st gen Tacoma has a bad set-up from factory on how the ball joint is mounted but damn - scary when that shiz goes out.

I bet it is scary! NAPA also has a tier system with suspension parts, like a good, better, best type deal. I got the high end ones. I also use my truck as a DD and to haul stuff, don't do any hard wheeling. I have a another vehicle for that!

just reboot them. takes a little time and maybe 2 new tools more than what you would need to just swap then. someone just did an excellent write up on it.

I will do this to OEM ones but make sure you look for any pitting or defects from dust/dirt intrusion. Typically the grease catches all the junk if you don't wait too long. It's about a 2 beer job and saves you some coin for sure!
