Getting ready to reboot my CV axles
The kit I got came with 4 identical sized, identical color (black) grease packets.
It is the All-Pro “long travel” kit.
Do y’all think I would be fine using the grease provided or should I get OEM grease?
Also, some of the powder coat is coming off the tulip, revealing some rust underneath, is that paintable? Same with the center shaft. I’ll include pictures in a minute.

Grease should be fine. Wire brush the rust and paint it.

Here is the rust. image.jpg I am thinking wirewheel and paint before taking it apart so I can have markings in the correct spot for reassembly.

I can’t seem to get this triple bearing off the shaft. The snap ring is removed. I have been using a 4LB hammer and a chisel but I am worried I am going to damage it.
Is it fine it I don’t remove this section? Just clean out all the bearings well.

^How do you replace the boots if you don't get the tripod off?

lol, I was staring at the CV when I realized that. Came back to fix my mistake but someone already caught me. Have any idea how to remove it?

^Wrap a rag around the bearings so they don't fall off the spider. Then use a bigger hammer with the chisel. A mechanic in a shop would use an air hammer.

Car Care Nut tries a manual hammer first, then switches to air hammer (11:30):

Can’t seem to get the joint off, even used a 3 jaw puller no luck. No worries, I’m asking around and trying to find someone with an air hammer. I have more than enough work to keep me busy right now lol.
While removing the axle I damaged a dust seal. It sits between the tulip and the rubber seal. I swear I searched for a part number but I’m kinda lost.
Anyone know the PN? Also does it press into the rubber seal? Or is it supposed to fit on the CV?

This thread never gets any traction lol, but don’t want to make a new thread for every question so here goes anyways.
I got the outer boot on and it looks to me like the first fin will contact the seat super easily.
    image.jpg
this extra space is added from OEM, I guess that’s what gives it the “long travel”
I’m a real LT guy now :jerkoff:
    image.jpg
I currently have the clamp in the original location on the outer clamp. The inner clamp is slid further than stock down the shaft. Should I be sliding it further from the outer clamp to make more space between fins?
These are the only 2 making contact.

Has anyone used a boot expander?

This fits on the CV tulip. It's a dust/debris deflector for the diff seal. It's close to the diff seal but doesn't rub against it.

I suspect the extended outer boot will foul on something in the suspension, maybe the lower shock stem. I suggest an OE-style boot. Unlike the OE inner boot, the OE outer boot typically doesn't have angle limitations when lifted.

Did you get the tripod off the shaft splines? Can go to a shop and have them put an air hammer on it for a nominal fee.

Tripod is off. Toyota doesn’t sell new dust seals, so I would have to run without one.
Dealership told me I could order it, paid 50 bucks. Go to pick it up and it’s not anything like what I showed/ explained to them. Of course they printed “no returns on special orders” at the top of the paper. Regardless I fought for the refund on the grounds I let him identify it and order it. Then someone else tried to identify it and told me they don’t sell them.
I don’t want to do this again because the diff seal goes bad and I am already 180 in for the boots. I’m thinking I will sell the boots and just buy some CVJ’s.

I wouldn't use the same grease for both inner/outer CVs. Might not cause an issue in the short term, but the difference in appearance and viscosity seems significant enough that it could shorten the inner bearing life in the long run. I also bought some All-Pro boots, but decided to go with OEM grease for the inners. In regards to the boot fins contacting each other, would they articulate that far when installed in the knuckle?

^The dust/debris shield is all-metal. You can reuse it. Just give it a squeeze with channel lock pliers so it stays on the tulip.

Did you use their grease for the outers? I already have their grease in the outers, I haven’t touched the inners yet. I supposed not it wouldn’t articulate enough to rub like that. Although the point about rubbing on the lowe shock mount has weight. I could always slide the outer boot more towards the hub.

    like so.

If you are right thank you sir, but the sites kept telling me it wouldn’t fit mine. I guess screw it for 7$ looks dead accurate.

You have a wheel seal on hand to install on the outer CV joint?
