I changed the air freshener to a new one, one time.
So I am rebuilding a cv axle that I’ve had laying around for years. It was disassembled and there are no match marks on it.. how imperative is it to have it all the correct orientation as it was when it was assembled?

I have no way of doing that so I’m just gonna put it back together however. just wanna see if it’ll cause vibrations or what not. Had about 50k miles on it.

Well, people do work and have lives outside the forum.

I tagged Dan in hopes that he can shed some light on your specific question. He has a nice walk-through on how to rebuild them.

Otherwise I've read about many others rebuilding their CV axles and having no issues putting them back together the way you will be.

Not quite pg&e (although I wish, they pay more) but very very similar.

@turbodb's write up does imply the significance of marking the cup and the axle so they go back together the same way. I don't know if it's because you'll get vibrations otherwise or if its just better that they go on as they came off to insure overall reliability, since it was together that way for so long originally.

Maybe there are some scratches or dirt markings you can line up as a best-guess scenario? Otherwise you might just have to send it and see

That’s what I was figuring so I’ll throw it all tether and mark it so next time I can put it back right. Thanks dude!

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
What do the rebuilders do when they reolace parts do the balance everyone .

I would think it would have to be really out of balance to effect things.

Might be a Fun project to throw one in the lathe check with the Italian Speedometer knock it apart and just throw it together aligned different and see what the difference might be.

Shit bolted onto other shit, and junk.
The match marking is for wear purposes of the axle shaft splines as it mates with inner bearings and will not cause any balance issues. The rotational mass plus radius from center is waaaay too little to worry about in this scenario. Would be enough for a machine to identify but not enough back through through the driveline into the cab.

I was thinking the same thing. Having rebuilt a few axles I’ve never had an issue with vibes after the fact.
