If we approach this from the legal angle, the manufacturer is not required to cover any failure due to any sort of modification you make, lifts, tires, wheels, or otherwise. They can deny a particular failure is a defect in workmanship because the failure was caused by a change you made, not by them building or installing something incorrectly. It's not a stretch of the imagination that a lift kit could cause an axle to fail prematurely. Thing is, the dealer should have said that; "it's normal wear and tear" is a bullshit reason. That implies that it's normal for an axle to fail in 8k in general. It's not. Full stop.

The manufacturer actually is required to prove that your failure was caused by a modification or abuse or something to deny coverage. They could blame any modification you made on any failure you had otherwise, like installing a seat cover causing a wheel bearing to fail or something equally nutty. It's why I'm eagerly awaiting the inevitable suit about GR Corolla owners having warranty coverage denied and being told it's because they exceeded 80mph. Toyota's lawyers will have to make some pretty wild claims to support that nonsense. But I digress.

The not so fun part with this is that the actual remedy for denied coverage under a warranty — after exhausting normal avenues like getting second opinions and yelling at various people until you decide you're not getting what you want — is to sue whoever denied your coverage. You've gotta go to court and convince a judge to order them to cover your repair. Even if you're entirely in the right, this is a pain in the ass. In this case, OP's likely not entirely in the right. Even worse, the monetary cost is likely larger than what can be brought in a small claims kind of setting, so the quicker and cheaper (and often not requiring an attorney) avenue isn't available. They'll have to file a proper civil suit, pay an attorney and court costs, and then find out that their lift kit was — based on a preponderance of evidence — the cause of their axle failure and the cracked housing. They still have to shell out to pay for the repair and now have a legal bill and wasted time to contend with.

Full disclosure: IANAL, but I feel pretty confident in explaining how this works having read quite a bit about it.

Same. Both times for me near full lock against an obstacle. You think I’d learn.

Out of curiosity, why do you think it's Toyota's responsibility to account for aftermarket modifications?

Looks like this has nothing to do with stress/breaking an axle and more so to do with the axle being too short causing the tripod joint to pull out of the cup. Cycle your suspension folks

funny. There is a tube influencer video from this past spring, 24 tacoma (I think it was sport) vs a Zr2 on an icy mountain trail …the tocama was struggling with grip (stock tires) on easy terrain and sure enough it popped the cv axel

    TRD Celica!
I had two Celicas in my life. 1978 (GT) and 1987.
I loved the 2004 GTS, but by then was onto trucks. Still see them occasionally. No stickers.
I guess someone wanted to rebadge it with the TRD sticker on the rear quarter panel?

    Crank case= engine block, yes?

For what its worth, I think at $5k, replacement of all parts and labor, that Toyota is probably still eating a lot of this, just not all of it.

I cant imagine what the cost of an engine block swap on this truck would be, but $5k sounds a bit light. Probably cheaper than the wheels tires and lift...

Still sucks, but I think it would be a lot worse out of warranty.

What all exactly are they proposing for the $5k? Maybe see about getting some TRDOR CV's or those Imaginary TRD Lift CV's

In fact, maybe you could implore them to do a little more since Toyota spent all of 2023 & 24 saying there would be a factory lift available along with all of these other parts that still aren't available.

You probably wouldve bought the damn Red or Silver Cv's if you had the option like they advertised

I don't see this as being ALL your fault, you probably bought all of what you thought was the best stuff available for what is advertised as the best truck for this purpose.

Last time I checked Icon wasnt in the CV business, so where the hell else are you supposed to get longer, stronger CV's for a truck who's 700 page manual mentions nothing of lifting the truck 2.5" or more and not being able to use reverse?

Did Toyota let you know that you would be their PSA administrator on lifting too high when they took your $50k?

I know this is all very unsatisfactory to you, but you should try to play ball with them.

If you are referring to the TFL video, that was an OR, and the CV axle didn't pop. The ADD sleeve in the front diff sheared. Toyota's solution was to adjust the ECM software to limit torque more conservatively when A-Trac is active. Even though the front diffs are similar, 3rd gen never made enough torque for the same failure mode to happen...

I think Tacomaworld should start a class action lawsuit because Toyota still hasnt released their damn TRD lift kit yet.

I was supposed to be able to add all these parts to the truck at the time of purchase and have them warrantied.

Here we are 1 year in, and you still cant order that ARB bumper, or the majority of the accessories they are advertising.

When my truck was purchased in May, you couldnt even get a damn skid plate for it

Has a lawyer not bought one of these trucks yet!?

And you could argue in a court of law that you replaced tires with the same factory specified sized tires as indicated in the owners manual, maintenance manual, and door card on the vehicle. You're making a dumb argument to try and prove a point thats just simply wrong. Manufacturers don't deny warranty claims for components (including stock size tires as indicated in the owners manual, maintenance manuals, and door cards). The point still stands - they can (and often do) deny warranty claims for modifications that alter the vehicle from its stock configuration (including oversized tires).

yeah, I think that was the clip, thanks. I do remember (now) they got it to the dealer where Toyota had an engineer look at it and diagnosed what you shared.

Go to Toyota.com and read up on their TRD spam.

If Toyota did what they advertised this OP wouldnt be here right now

I'm pretty sure theres video of Sheldon Brown saying you could get all of this imaginary stuff in one of their press videos
