Hey all - took my truck for a pre trip check today and have a small tear in my passenger CV boot. They have no time to replace before I leave on a cross country trip next week. I don't plan on doing much off roading just the national parks. Thoughts on if this can wait until I get back to Boston or if I should postpone the trip until I can get it replaced?

    Thanks

It's normal, you will be fine. There is always play in the CV's at the differential when 4wd is not engaged.

You'll be fine. I drove across the country, beat the shit out of my truck in the desert, and drove back just fine.

@DustStorm4x4 thanks for the advice. I just took a peek and the tear is on the inner passenger CV boot, medium sized, nothing too major - the tech said i should be fine as long as i'm not going nuts off road, most likely looking at a 4K-5K mile trip and we don't have any plans on trail riding - mostly main roads through the National Parks. Id replace everything myself however all of my tools are back east.

This may sound pointless but i was thinking of cleaning up the boot and putting a few layers of high temp silicon over the tear, does this sound like a useless idea?

    Thoughts and advice appreciated.

You could get a boot repair kit. I'd never use one as a long term fix. If anything, you might want to pick one up and have it in the truck. It is something you could do on the road if it starts getting worse.

@PixelPusher - great idea, any advice on where to pick one up - or are they only online?

I just did a quick look. I can't seem to find one that fits a tacoma. Sorry if I got your hopes up. They might be available, but my googlefu is not locating any at the moment.
