CV Boot "sucked in"

Just put in a new CV axle yesterday and the boot is killing me. It looks sucked in. How do I fix that? Im thinking of opening the top plug for the transfer case to see if that lets any air in the cv boot and then start pinching the boot to make it form back to normal.

 

Loosen the small clamp and allow it to relax .The boot shown it the picture is clamped in the extended position

 

ok. I finally found something on the internet right after I posted this. someone said to use a greased basketball needle and push inside to add some air.

 

Did it work?

havent tried either yet. about to soon.

 

pretty sure it is. im not by my truck yet. im youtubing. about to head out to fix.

 

OK , removing the fill plug on the transfer case will not help .
Removing the fill plug on the front diff wont help either .The inner plunging joint is solid
Your best bet is removing the small clamp and allowing the CV boot to relax .As soon as you remove the small clamp , the cv boot will contract back to where you need to re-tighten the clamp .
If you are carefull ,two standard screwdrivers work to loosen the small clamp

thanks yea it was fast and easy. was googling earlier and all people were saying is replace, damaged etc. that wasn't the problem.

 

Curious, did you loosen the clamp or slide the needle in under the clamp? Was the boot clamped down too far down the shaft?

 

Basketball needle. Idk what happened. It was brand new. I just tossed in the axle and it sucked in.

 

I'm wondering, if it was OK when installed - why the vacuum? I'd run the vehicle for at least a 1/2 hour - then carefully feel up in the back of the wheel to see if the wheel bearing is heating up?? (or use a laser temp gauge?). My thought is the bearing gets hot if it's going bad and heats up the air which leaks out under pressure. Then when it cools the boot get sucked in. If this is the case and you put a tiny hole in the boot it probably will not happen again - so I'd check it anyway.

 

Wasn't hot. Car was parked for over 24 hours before installing a new one. I probably just shoved in too fast and didn't get any air inside.

 

No no, AFTER you installed it did the bearing get hot and cause this....

So mango how'd it go? I have same issue after install. Did you slide needle under small clamp? Easy enough? I know the shaft has a lip under there to hold boot collar in place to keep from sliding.
