So took truck in for 65,000 mile service today. When I pick it the service manager tells me the CV boots are worn and power steering fluid is low. Of course they had a nice quote of $380 per side for the cv boots and didn't look where the leak on the power steering fluid is (if there is one). I understand what to look for if the boot is torn or leaking. But how do you tell it is worn?

I crawled under the truck when I got home to take a closer look. I am not seeing anything other than what appears to be brake dust by the hub. To me everything looks ok. The wet spots are water. Had a slight drizzle on the way home.

Boots look fine to me. Don't replace till they tear, I believe it's a waste of money.

As far as the power steering fluid. I would Just top it off and monitor the level.

    CV boots look flawless.

    Fucking dealers.

Also do yourself a favor put a dab of grease on the steering stop (First picture, bottom left corner, hexagon looking piece)

Thanks for the reply. I did some looking on the power steering fluid but not too in depth. I was more concerned with the cv boots.

That's what I thought. Lucky for me, I am taking the wife's 4Runner in for its first service this afternoon. Time to have a polite conversation with service manager. And thanks for the info on the grease.

 Funny thing is their diagnostic report says 3 of the 4 are torn. The 4th is worn/noisy.

Your inner boots look great, to me it looks like your outer boots may be wearing a bit. As long as there is grease in there, you should be fine.

$380 per side for CV boots? jesus...Toyota quoted me $130 per side for my lower ball joints, figure those would be more expensive.

Toyota doesn't offer just a LBJ replacement, they make you buy the entire LCA for 2nd gens.

Wow, that sucks...fortunately for the first gen I was able to just get the LBJ's. Extended warranty ended up covering it anyway but I was surprised that the parts weren't stupid expensive, the labor would've been though. Think they quoted me almost $900 for the job but luckily I only have to pay a small deductible.

Went back this afternoon with 4Runner. I politely asked the Asst. Service manager if she could explain a few things in the diagnostic. There also happened to be one of the shop guys standing there. I start off asking about the boots and asked I would have grease all over correct and she agreed. Then I showed her the pics. The guy from the shop asked to see and he started shaking his head like that is BS what the report said. He asked her who did the work. When she replied, he gave her are you f'ing kidding me look. I am pretty sure he was saying that tech is an idiot. She proceeded to say he was the only lead this morning and maybe he got vehicle confused with another vehicle. She mentioned tech put in notes that passenger boot was blown apart. I told her my concern was dropping $760 on repairs I didn't need. I stayed cool the whole time minus saying maybe the tech needs glasses (I wear glasses so I can say that). She offered for me to bring truck back for her and service manager to look at. Later on she asked for the pictures to show the tech, which I sent.

There was another Tacoma there when I dropped mine off. Poor excuse regardless. Especially if other Tacoma owner does have the issue and doesn't know it. Totally understand people make mistakes but someone else may have given them the go ahead and been out the $$$.

Side note. We have bought 2 vehicles from there. Bought the 4Runner in May from a forum member who is a salesman there. I've had every Toyota recommended service done there with no issues. Got the truck with 10k on it and now just did 65k service.

Thank you everyone for the replies and help. Tacoma World FTMFW!

jesus christ, I lose more and more faith in Toyota service departments every day.

Glad you got it sorted out and didn't pay a bunch of money for shit you didn't need, I shudder to think at how much money they must make off of the ignorant and naive. Always keep a sharp eye out and an objective mind, don't always take their word for gospel.
