Has anyone done a write up on removing a broken cv joint/axle or replacing tie rods out in the field while off-roading? I have been searching the forums but haven't been able to find anything.
    Thanks for any assistance,
    Ron Wilkinson

Would it not be the same as to it being in a shop/ garage?

More importantly are you currently stuck in the field with a broken CV?

It's done the same way as you do it in the garage. Just more uncomfortable.

Luckily I am not currently stuck but I am wondering if something would be done differently since I wouldn't be doing a replacement out there, just removing the broken cv joint to get back home.

Biggest issue if you have to remove the axle and don't have something to put in it's place you can have issues. You need the stub shaft going through the wheel bearing, and with out the inner shaft your diff will be leaking oil. I know some people keep shaft ends in their truck for that reason incase something happens to their CVs and they want to take them out so they can be rebuilt but still drive the truck in the mean time.

Assume you mean how do you keep going if way out there alone and a CV breaks. Some carry a spare. New Napa shafts about $125. Same with tie rods carry a spare.
Both ends need to remain in so you would have to remove the center shaft part destroying the boots and CVs.
Front diff would empty out without it and wheel bearing is supported by it.
So no 4wd at that point anyway first try 2wd and see if you can drive out with it as is or if 4wd required to get out you got to go get a new one.

See you are in UT and lower gears bigger tires. Don't forget spare U-joints. Watch out for full throttle climbs and a big bounce as that can break the ring and pinion - been there.
Hard to plan for everything. By the time I got out didn't have too many teeth left on them. Still a fun trip.
