I have had a clanking sound on both sides in the front when going over bumps since I bought the truck and I have been trying to find out what has been causing it. It is a metal on metal type sound. I checked all the bushings and just about everything around the front end and everything was tight except the sway bar links so I replaced them and still have the sound, so I put her on jackstands and removed both wheels. I found out the outer CV housing on both sides are slapping against the steering knuckle on both sides. Is this a common problem and does anybody know how to fix this problem?

I've heard that clanking in the CVs mean the shafts need to be replaced, but people will chime in once theres some pics of the problem

The CV joints do not click or pop while turning either way with or with 4wd engaged, so I doubt that they are bad, I could be wrong. Every front wheel drive I have owned with bad CV joints has clicked or poped while turning. The outer metal case of the cv joint has play that slides back and forth about an 1/16". There is no play up and down. The boots are intact, no rips or tears.
