    Hey guys,

Got a question about using the CVT on my Tacoma: when I first got my drivers license, all I drove were straight gears for years. After going through brake shoes like hell, it was finally suggested to me to use my gears to slow me down as well. And it worked. Now that I have the CVT, is it possible to use it in the same way? Drop it down to fourth, maybe even third, to help slow me down. Please don't lambaste me if this is a stupid question....just wondering if it's a good idea or not.

    Thanks

You have a 6 speed automatic, and yes its ok to use the s mode to slow the truck down on a grade.

If you have an automatic... don't try to shift for your automatic. Let it do its job. You job is the steering wheel, brake and gas... focus on those.

Tacoma's don't use a CVT transmission. 4WD Versions do have something called CV Joints so maybe you're thinking of those?

On a somewhat related note, maybe bringing Shop and/or Auto Shop classes back to school would be a good idea.

Do you mean CVT the roof top tent brand?
Referring to added weight and downshifting?
Or a continually variable transmission, in which case...what are u driving?

Yeah, the cvt is in the prius. The tacoma uses a electronically controlled automatic transmission like most vehicles sold today.

I agree! Sadly most of the HS's in my area have removed that program. The HS I went to removed it because people complained that there were always a bunch of broken-down cars all over the place. I ended-up taking a year of auto shop classes in College (I took a year of Welding classes too, I enjoyed Community College).

Surprisingly the HS my GF's kid goes to still offers it (and seems to have a pretty decent program from what I can tell by looking-over their fence) but it seems most parents would rather their kid do something which doesn't have such a stigma attached to it.

Thus we have a generation which doesn't know what sort of transmission their car or truck has in it...

None of these problems if you had a manual (transmission).

To answer the original question, yes you can downshift to slow down. I do it all the time when going downhill. Thats really the only time you should do it, not for regular traffic. A bump to the left on the shifter is usually enough for most hills. Super steep, slow hills you might have to drop down one more gear. If you are on cruise control it will sometimes do this for you automatically, but that seems hit or miss.
