I couldn’t get motivated due to a rainy, gray day but I got some Netflix time and a good nap in!

Thread Update (not really, but I got your attention)

I have been very negligent with my build thread. Maybe if I do some updates I can elevate my thread to a very mediocre thread…

Anyway, I’m a history buff so I’ve read a lot about my county. I’ve taken several local history classes at our local college and have made friends with the local historical society. This has given me some clues to many locations that I find interesting. Now that I have plenty of time to explore I go look for these places, sometimes I get lucky and actually find them.

Some time ago I read a paper about some of the local saw and grist mills from the 1860s to early 1900s. There were some pictures or sketches of these locations, without any actual directions or specific addresses of course. Just enough for a inquisitive guy to get an idea and to go off exploring. With the name of the creek it was on I knew the general area to look. There is also a deactivated DOF road that runs through the area. That road also shows up on a 1930 topo map of the area. Hummm, I think we may be on to something. Let’s go exploring!

The truck got us to the area and conveniently there is a primitive campground close by to park in.

I grabbed my day pack and headed off to the closed road. The road is still in pretty good shape for being closed as long as I can remember. Well, that didn’t last long, rather quickly the road disappeared into a brush filled gully. It was much easier to go cross country near it.

That is until this little guy decided the faint game trail I was using made a great spot to get some sun.
    upload_2021-12-8_20-20-6.jpg

Luckily the grass was short enough I saw him before I stepped on him. There was some fast backpedaling and cursing at this point. I gave him a wide berth and we went our separate ways.

Approaching where the “road” crosses our namesake creek.
    upload_2021-12-8_20-22-58.jpg
The square object to the right is a formed piece of concrete. I don’t know if Forestry placed it here at some point or if it’s part of an 1930s improvement. It was convenient for crossing the creek with only one slightly wet boot.

    upload_2021-12-8_20-29-58.jpg
The brush is pretty thick on this side of the creek, hopefully it’s thinner on the other side.

    upload_2021-12-8_20-32-39.jpg
This is supposed to be an intersection with another road that parallels the creek. At least the brush has been cleared out with controlled burns.

    upload_2021-12-8_20-34-3.jpg
I worked my way down stream, going to the actually creek bank in places where the brush was thin. The creek quickly started to widen out and get deeper.

    upload_2021-12-8_20-36-14.jpg
About my third inspection of the creek I noticed this. I don’t think sticks grow square in nature.

    upload_2021-12-8_20-37-16.jpg
Looking down stream I notice some plank looking boards. I had to leave the creek bank to work my way down to them. Once I made it there it was obvious this was man made.

    upload_2021-12-8_20-38-19.jpg
Oh, look at the row of stumps. Yeah, I don’t think they are stumps.

Stepping back and looking at the entire scene it became obvious I was here.

    upload_2021-12-8_20-48-34.jpg
This is all that remains of the mill site but considering our sub-tropical climate, termites, and hurricanes since the 1930s it’s amazing there is anything left at all.
    upload_2021-12-8_20-49-42.jpg

After looking around the site for a while, I followed the creek about a 1/4 of a mile to where it empties into the Blackwater River.

    upload_2021-12-8_20-53-39.jpg
This is where I turned around and headed back to the truck. It was an easy 3 mile round trip hike. No close calls with snakes on the way back thankfully!
