I had an interesting Sunday afternoon that I wanted to share with you, see if anyone else has had this fun.

I’ve been on BP meds for over a year now and it was working (keeping it at 130/80 or lower). My doctor did increase my dosing strength 3 months ago as it didn’t seem to last 24 hours on the original dosage. A follow up for the dosing change and bloodwork is actually scheduled for later this month. I have been noticing a random rise in my blood pressure readings the past month or so. Sometimes it will be “normal” post meds, others it is higher than I expect and seems to hold there most of the day.

Over the past week and especially into the weekend, I felt my heart beat in my chest strongly for no apparent reason. No chest pains, no shortness of breath, no radiating pain in my left arm or neck, not racing, just beating strongly enough I noticed it. Pulse seems a little elevated but not very fast according to the BP monitor. It would last a random amount of time and would just go away, never noticed it if I was doing something, only when I was still. Going on a walk or doing something physical didn’t seem to affect it or cause any discomfort.

After self assessing, I said to myself it doesn’t meet the criteria of a heart attack or tachycardia and I’ll talk to my doctor about it on the follow up or go to the ER if there is any change.

Sunday I woke up feeling odd, really can’t describe it beyond that. BP was higher than normal. If I was moving around I felt ok, if I sat still I could feel my heartbeat and would get antsy, still no “classic heart attack signs,” no chest pain or shortness of breath at all. I checked my BP a couple more times throughout the morning and it continued to rise, at 150/90 (after meds) I told the wife to take me to the ER.

At the ER it was straight to a room and hooked up to a monitor. Doc asked questions and looked at the chart, said it’s not a heart attack - that made me feel better lol. Bloodwork was drawn and they monitored me for a couple of hours. BP did drop some to the 130s/high 80s but no lower. Heart rate was never over 82 that I saw. O2 sats were 97% on room air.

Final diagnosis was heart palpitations, 3 PVC's (Premature Ventricular Contractions) while on the monitor and a low potassium level. The doctor said the heart palpitations could be stress, they are not uncommon and are normally benign. The PVC's again are pretty common and not an immediate cause of concern. Doctor said the low potassium could cause these problems but said it’s really not that low of a reading but was below the bottom limit, 3.3 for me with the normal low 3.5. They gave me a nasty tasting orange potassium drink and cut me loose.

I did feel better by Sunday night, palpitations were still there but much weaker. Monday morning my BP was back in the normal range for when I wake up. I’ve felt some mild palpitations throughout the day but not very long lasting and nowhere near as forceful as Sunday. Afternoon BP was again normal.

I’ve been referred back to my primary for follow up. I called to make an appointment and first available is 2 weeks from now glad this is nothing serious…

Today my BP was elevated again but nothing crazy, heart rate is up a little too. I’ve felt the palpitations a few times throughout the day but they aren’t too strong and randomly come and go. I went for a 3 mile walk and everything was fine. After the walk my BP was 117/77 but bounced back up later in the afternoon. I’ve eaten a banana this morning and drank an electrolyte drink this afternoon to try and boost my potassium some more to see if it helps any.

Eat your bananas my friends. I really don’t recommend experiencing this feeling.
