I got 1 of the 2 water heaters replaced this afternoon.

I have never been so terrified to wire up a water heater.

They wanted to pay me. I said " nope, I was never here!".

Was gonna do Jack shit.

Got 2, not 1, but 2 emergency plumbing calls. Both have water heaters that are leaking all over the place. Of course both are 150 miles apart.

Guess who gets to spend most of the time this weekend driving and fixing shit.

That sucks your weekend is getting screwed up. Hope the second water heater is an easy fix and you get back home quick.

Yikes! Those old fuse boxes scare me too.

Good morning guys, sorry for the delay, here’s the trip report for the ramble this past Wednesday.

I picked up Mike and we carefully planned out our adventure over about 2 minutes while sitting in the truck. It consisted of where do you want to go and where do we eat lunch. Pretty typical lol.

We have kicked around the idea of trying to find an old roadbed that went across the Escambia River swamp for an adventure this winter when the bugs and brush die off so Mike wanted to go check out the landing on our side of the river to see what it looks like. We headed up to that area and turned off onto some nice dirt roads and worked our way to the boat launch that’s at that location.

Not much to look at now but this was a thriving ferry business back in the 1920's known as Webb's Landing. The road should come out about where that brush overhangs the water on the right. I thought I had a better picture looking straight across but I guess I don’t . That will be where we cross to start this excursion. It’s going to take a boat to get across but it’s only about 30 yds wide right there. After that it will be a walk in the woods along an overgrown roadbed (hopefully).

There was a local fishing at the launch who we talked to who mentioned hunting over there. He didn’t know there was an old road but did say there was some cleared out open areas that could be the old road. He also mentioned hunting on the island across from another boat launch and said there were several old houses over there that he thinks are quarters from some of the old timber camps when logging was a major industry in our county. With that nugget of info we headed up to that landing to check it out.

We’re going to need a boat here too. He said he went in directly across from the launch so that should be the sandy area at the top left of the picture.

By now it was getting close to lunchtime so we headed out of the woods and over to a favorite locals spot called Jimmy's. The daily lunch special is always good. Fish and hamburger steak with 2 sides and a drink were today’s special.

After lunch we drove up to an area where there were 3 old brickyards which was another major industry in this area back in the day. These 3 brickyards produced the bricks that were used in all 3 of our local historical forts, we’re talking millions of bricks. One of the brick companies, Tayler Brickworks is still in business and supplies bricks all over the southeast. They use another facility now for their production.

We know one of the old brickyards was demolished, the other 2 were salvaged and the remnants left to the elements. We found some of the workings last year but haven’t been back to investigate further. We drove to the area and were surprised to find the field where we were wanting to look around was being cleared. The one good thing that did was make our exploring pretty easy.

That’s Mike. These were some big reinforced concrete beams, whatever they supported was heavy.

We're not sure what sat on these piers but it leaked oil on all of them.

Pretty sure this was a drying kiln where the bricks were put after forming but before they were fired.

As we were walking back to my truck a Ford drove up with an older guy driving. Mike and I both said under our breath hope it’s not the property owner, it was. We apologized for being on his property and explained we were just looking at the old brickyard remnants. He waasnt upset with us and asked how we knew what it was. We explained how we’re local history buffs and had learned a lot of this from the historical and archeological societies. Turns out he’s a history buff too and was impressed with our knowledge. He told us he was headed to Pensacola so we couldn’t do it now but the other brickyard is also on his property and he would be happy to show us around We exchanged business cards and parted ways with plans on calling him in the next couple of weeks.

We started headed back home and I said let’s swing by another boat launch were I had information about another road into the swamp. We stopped there and found the water was low enough to confirm my information.

At least it looks new enough to have a dedicated neutral buss bar.
