I wouldn't exactly call Trek "Cheapie", they make many models to fit many budgets. The FX line is definitely a good value for the money, I have a 7.2 FX. If I did it over again I'd probably opt for the 7.4 to get the carbon fork and upgraded components. The 7.3 has an aluminum fork which is going to ride like shit on anything but the smoothest pavement.

Treks are definitly good bikes. Honestly, all the companies sold by true bike retailers (not Walmart or target) are good, so getting one that fits you well and that you like the look of is more important than the brand (IMHO). Finding a local bike shop you want to support can be a find factor too. I bought my first bike and Performance Bike and saved a ton of money, but the bike was poorly built and their service has been terrible. They are very friendly but suck at working on bikes and not knowledgeable about the high end/race scene. I bought my tri-bike at a local shop, which met an online retailer price when I asked for that, and has provided 5-star service so far.

I would look at Fuji as well. They are in the same price range as trek and have several female-specific models at various price points. My Fuji SST (which is NOT cheap) has been awesome.

trek is a very nice brand and they have awesome customer service

trek/cannondale/spec/cube/kona/gaint/cervelo/etc. all make very nice bikes. pick the one she likes the look/color of and one that fits your budget. Personally I would make sure it at least has 105 5700 or 5800 or equivalent sram/campy.

My wife and I both bought Treks. Mine is a ds 8.3 and hers is a neko? Bought from a local bike shop and after we bought them I found that a LBS in williamsburg had those priced a little cheaper so my bike shop reimbursed me the difference. The hardest thing for me is getting used to is the saddle. I have been told I just have to toughen up my sit bones. What in the heck is 105 5700 or 5800 or equivalent sram/campy? I am a rookie you know....Thanks

that's awesome your lbs refunded the difference. As long as you're not getting butt sores or strange boners then give it time.

and 5700/5800 are components. Dont worry about it, just get use to riding. all components do they same thing :)

Thought I had posted this but apparently not. I upgraded to my first carbon frame a few months back. 2014 Cannondale Synapse Carbon 5. Ditched the 25mm Luganos after about 3 rides - tires felt like velcro on the asphalt. Installed some 23mm Michelin pro4 service course and it really made the bike feel like it rolled a lot better.

Fluid trainer is on the UPS guy's truck right now, and I just signed up for TrainerRoad - I need structure around how I ride to see if it helps me build strength and power that I feel I'm lacking. I use the roadbike to train, and ride/race MTB. I'm primarily focusing on bigger distance races instead of cross country. First race this year is in 12 weeks - starting off with the Ouachita Challenge 65-miler.

I have had my Trek Madone 3.1 for about 5 years now. Not riding in the winter months right now but cannot wait till spring hits. I used to ride a lot since I never had a vehicle growing up for multiple reason. Definetly a way to stay in shape during running season.

    ^^^^^Nice bikes!!!

Regarding saddles. There's no two ways about it. Find a bike shop that can measure your seating size number.....then getting a saddle, according to that number. And if you're going to go over the budget on any one item - it has to be the saddle. I did this, and have zero regrets.

Yup - I found a model that works well for me, WTB Silverado, and I've got one on all 4 of my active bikes.

Adjustments is what makes a comfortable and enjoyable ride then no adjustments.

BTW I have a 2014 Trek Madone 3.1 and LOVE it

I found a pair of shimano womens shoes at goodwill the other week. size 39EU/7.2USA. they were a whopping 5$ and came w/cleats so I said why not. They are currently on CL but if anyones wife wants them 5$+ shipping and they are yours. They would make an awesome starter or winter shoe.

    pretty good condition.

Later this year it will be joined by a Felt IA16 and the Cervelo will spend even more time on the trainer.

Howdy Folks... So I'm a pretty avid rider- MTB. I haven't ridden a road bike in 6 yrs. I used to ride very well, but stuff happens. Anyway, I have the itch again and i'm looking at a CAAD12 Disc 105 groupset. Any thoughts on this rig as a getting back into. I'd mainly be using it for distance riding and training.
