Yeah for sure, if you see a lot of chip & seal or just rough pavement, some fat tires help. Those voyagers I run are 35c since thats all I can clear-they sell a 38c, but it measures out to a 40 on the rim. but the tread is like something off a sport motorcycle. They absolutely soak up the bumps and the constant vibration of the rough stuff, though the tubeless is the biggest factor in ride quality next to the bike itself. Here's a link to the tire itself http://www.vittoria.com/tire/voyager-hyper/. I can't say enough about them. Plus they are tough as nails. My teammates have ridden thousands of miles of flint hills gravel with very few issues. The main culprit to our flats is that flint rock(which natives used to make arrowheads) will slice the sidewall of the tire. The sealant cant handle a literal knife wound, so we have to boot them with a piece of old tube.

I have considered a back-up bike in that realm. Maybe a little more road than trail. But certainly heavier than my Tri bike - and bigger heavier wheels. Would be great to train on a heavier ride - that requires more work. Especially in the early parts (and later parts) of the ride season here.

3T Exploro and Open U.P. are both really nice cross frames. Both designed by the same guy. They have the ability to run 700x40c tires, or you can run 650b with some 2.1 inch wide mountain bike tires. Hell, you could even make it goofy and put some 23c skinnies on there! Either of the two are on my list right now. Just get the cash ready...

Yeah.....none of this is cheap. My Tri-bike is already getting out of hand. :p

But if I get something as a trainer - it would be closer to a road bike, than a mountain bike. I plan to get a decent mountain bike sometime within the next year or so - as I have friends trying to drag me out on trails. My current mountain bike just isn't cutting it anymore.

Gotcha, I just have an aluminum road bike for workouts. Mainly ride it on the rear wheel trainer when its blistering hot or frigid and windy here. Get something with some meat on its bones, then the tri bike will feel like you are riding a knife. I hear you on the mountain bike though. I sold mine and have been looking at new ones ever since. I miss it-since it was the one that started the addiction.

Not sure who thought it'd be cute to put that silver 105 on back but it'll turn black by next week and that oval 520 crankset will turn into a black 105 as well. 37s may be on the way too but giving the 35s a chance for now. So far they have been great on pavement and dirt.

In other news got the call from the LBS bike is 100% again. They had to true both wheels, adjust the crankset, straighten the bars and replace my rear selector after accident but I'm good as new and 0.00 cost all covered under my 1 year repair and maintenance.

I got the Giro Savant MIPS a couple of months ago. I think it is one of the cheapest helmets with MIPS and it looks and feel good.

I found these and have 5 or 6 sets. Cree XML T6 LED....1200, 1600, 2000 & 3600 lumens. Less than $20 shipped. They even have 15000 lumen shit for $35. Have had really good luck with them, 3hr+ run time, bright as car light, small battery.............cannot beat the price anywhere, anyhow on lumens per buck. I will never spend 3-500 on any fancy brand name lights ever again.

Try to beat $19 shipped with 1200 lumens....................cannot be done.

    15000 lumens + a taillight - $35 shipped...........

That is not what I would care about running into on a bike trail...something like wolves and bears or wolverine and badgers or moose would be more of a concern to me. WTF is alligator doing in MN anyway tho? Lost ass mofo - downstream, you aren't a salmon. Go back south bitch.

You all probably already know this and fwiw, my wife wanted bike shoe pedals on her bike so we bought a set and i had a heckuva a time getting off the old pedal on the non chain side. Oiled it with several types of rust buster, let it sit overnight, used a cheater bar, rapped the wrench with a hammer etc...and it would not budge. Brought a heat gun home from work and 30 seconds of heat on the nut and boom loosened up.

grease is your friend for those new pedals and loosen the pedals every now and then.

That's a good looking bike! REI sells a red "Adventure" bike that catches my eye every time, a new mountain bike is higher on my list though haha
