Yes, catch cans with oil returns are available. Here is a unit that Hino supplies on some of their diesels. The drain has a flapper valve, presumably to keep oil flowing down.

My thoughts at this point.... There's a reason Toyota/Yamaha chose this solution... constantly forcing the oil back to the sump is a superior way to continuously accomplish the task at hand in all situations from mild to wild. It's a vetted OEM system that has seen millions upon millions of miles of use in both street and racing environments.

With that said, a big thank you to those that have contributed, including those w/ different solutions... and by all means keep discussing them, we have no where to go but up (or should that be down?).

I have not commented because personally, 99.9% of the time I am not in a situation that will require this solution and the other tenth of the time would be on that angle for a few seconds at most.
I am following this because @Jowett is a good guy who is one of the few here who has the ability to come up with a solution. Keep going man!

E36 has that as well. Good technology, rarely used by OEM's, and some of those cars were manufactured more than 20 years ago.

Interesting thread so far. What kinds of angles are we talking about here btw? Like MOAB level stuff or even on your typical blue level trails? Honestly you’re making me more willing to deal with my 4 cylinders lack of power

Forgive my ignorance, but what about a catch can with a two way check valve(s), combined with a zero pressure drain valve leading back to the oil filler neck. It might alleviate some concerns about the catch can filling up (they're super close in proximity). Although, might not address OP's concerns about conflicts in the head.

No hard data on angles or oil flow exists at this point, at least that we can access. When I get my engine on the stand for building, I'll gather some to the best of my abilities.

The catch cans are lightly discussed above. They can save the day, and yes, probably employ some type of drain back.

For now, here's a decently steep but rather mundane climb that just about anyone with basic off-roading knowledge and a stock truck can accomplish. Just over 30 seconds and it's done.

does this issue exist in the horizontally oriented versions ? Just curious if this problem is a result of retrofitting the engine into the tacoma.

I was thinking some kind of float valve. Once the catch can is full of liquid the float would rise and close off the outlet and would also uncover (open) a bypass to ? (insert location here)

This still wouldn't fix the problem of all the oil staying on top of the heads and possibly running the sump dry.

    Reverse hill climbing, perhaps?

I still climb steep hills, just not exceedingly long ones.

I used to have a front wheel drive SUV and if I wanted to go up a hill slowly backwards had much better traction.

My wife and her work buddies passed around a beater Toyota pickup for anyone who needed wheels among them and it used to be 4wd, but the driveshaft snapped one day and they just drove it as a front wheel PU from then on. It got better traction that way with the engine weight up front.
