Negligence and ignorance my friend!

At least when I do finally get around to it, I do it right. Or at least attempt to.

Was he chasing a misfire? I'd absolutely believe any one of those could be too far gone to spark, that's a testament to how long these engines can run without maint. The dual electrode plugs certainly did their job if they made it over 100k

I thought he said he was. Either way it shows why I only toss OEM parts at my Toyotas, yea you pay extra but they last forever!

I'd make a little side bet that #3 was the one with the main misfire, and maybe its companion cylinder because it's wasted spark. But #3 has a perfect vertical carbon track up the ceramic insulator... he needs to replace wires and coil boots too since the plugs started tracking.

Ding ding ding, was cylinder 3. Part of why I wanted to track what plugs were what and making sure I actually found the culprit.

Obviously new wires are going on, you can see the full list of shit a page back haha, it's a lot. What do you mean by tracking though?

Gonna need three of these guys
    https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=2194396&cc=1375343&pt=10150&jsn=12142

and a new wire set too.

Carbon tracking is what's left behind when the spark escapes from the insulator and the plasma burns the shit on the surface layer of the plug and boot (carbon tracking unfortunately is conductive and makes the misfires even worse as it burns the insulator and plug boot)

Oh cool, you got all new coils too. Save your old ones, they're good trail spares. I bet it'll be like a new truck, must've been pulling timing for ages with gaps like that.

Yeah I heard the coils are good to have as spares and rarely fail. Figure I'll save the ones off 1 and 5 and toss the one off 3 just in case. Although there is probably a test I can do to verify it's working well and just replace the boot, but having 3 spare coils feels excessive.

The coils are probably good still, I'd toss new boots on em and sell em or keep as spares. Running with excessive gap is hard on them but they'd have died already if they were gonna, toyota coils are pretty hearty. I keep a single coil pack and the longest coil wire (can reach any cyl necessary) as a trail spare. Just one of my originals with a new boot and a good used wire.

This project is slow going but making headway. Installed all new spark plugs and got them torqued and protected. Got the covers off and the motor looks pretty damn good overall for 265k miles. Cleaning the old FIPG is the most time consuming stuff at the motor. Especially at the half moon locations themselves.

Right after the covers came off:

I was surprised at how much grime gathers between the little bar in front of the plug and the plug itself:

    One side is cleaned up:

I also got a little something to organize my thoughts. Still need to finish adding to this list since everything that is on the previous page is not here yet:

Starting to clean up the second side tonight, and then valve covers themselves later this week. That should be faster as I can be a little more aggressive with them. I went back and forth on painting the covers but for something that constantly sees sandy pine barrens water, I don't think the juice is worth the squeeze.

If you need, I have 4 injector seals that I will never use if you want me to send down to you. I know they are like $4-5 each.

I don't really NEED them since I have reman injectors from Motor West with new orings and seals but I have no problem hoarding spare parts. If you want you can put them with that cluster if you are still hanging onto that for me.

Maybe throwing it in the oven a bit to let the paint cure?

I've done that with parts in the past to prevent chipping easily.

I was worried about the existing spark plug boots/pcv valve melting. I left everything in place so that the paint wouldn’t fuck how it sealed up on the new versions. I’ll just be careful and lay a nice thick set of towels down. My son is sick so I won’t be tackling them tomorrow like I hoped anyway so I’ll just give them more time to cure.
