I felt the same way but realized I was avoiding round tube projects because I hated the coping so much. Now I'm excited for my next project and to have actually good fitment.

This might be the best representation. I havent had to haul the bike in the truck since i got this rack.

But i have the stuff to do it in the trailer whenever i get around to it. The moto hauling thread on advrider has some examples i think. But the turnbuckles/carbiner just go the the peg

So I guess the only thing that I am concerned with is the extra movement this setup would allow vs something like the mx mounts system has. Like on your carrier the front is chocked, and both tires cant slip out forward or back, so that way to secure it down probably is super stable. If I go from L track mount, to turn buckle, to carabiner to peg I am introducing 4 pivot points on that system. I mean I guess under tension it's a straight line, but the thing I really liked about the other two systems is that the bike is being held straight up and down and being kept from being able to move left to right, front to back. So even if the suspension minorly compresses and extends, the bike is pretty much being held in the same location for the entire duration. This other setup seems it's just a more rigid strap system at the pegs instead of the forks, but still a similar system either way.

your front tire is going to be against the bed anyways. you can put a fair amount of tension on them to compress the bike an inch or more and it ends up pretty stable since its loaded evenly on front/rear suspension

So I think really to do a system like you are talking about it will be closer to something like this:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzqOV_k4PA8

Because it pulls that tension forward too. I am sure you can make the mounts a little forward to make it naturally pull forward but it will add more difficulty for initial setup.

I am intrigued on this system I stumbled across now too:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiBsDvGFjGg&feature=emb_logo

I'm okay with a kit being on the pricier side if I know the bike will stay put under heavier wheeling.

They dont need to pull forward at all. The bike is going to already be pushed up against the front. Guess you could "pull" it forward some with the turnbuckle since you tighten as you want it.

Might just be something you have to see in person. Its like bike binderz just cheaper

I mean I'm def down trying to DIY it. Sometimes though by the time I buy the components to DIY, get it setup how I want it, I am in for the same cost as a pre-built system with half the advantages. It's like building your current carrier or modding one that exists vs buying the built tough and proven setup.

I didnt think of the setup till i met a guy with the bike binderz. He had two bikes in a gladiator loaded within minutes.

yeah that’s what I want, easy on, easy off, and not being concerned about weight shifting/straps loosening. I see what you mean about not needing front tension though, the one guy who did a review didn’t have the front tire pushed against anything at all.

All good options though. Just wanted to throw the option out there

for sure and I appreciate it. I think I’ll price out materials to build my own system and see where I land.

    Some updates:

Went exploring with @planters15 during one of the last snow storms:

Been slow to work on this project but I am finally seeing some light at the end of the tunnel.

I decided to say fuck it and hack up the bed rack after I had welded it to the new base:

[IMG]Untitled by Michael Halat, on Flickr

From there I loaded the bike and saw whether my idea would even work:

[IMG]Untitled by Michael Halat, on Flickr

    So far so good.

Scrapped my DIY idea for a hinge and latch and got a setup that was made for SXS's made by AJK Offroad. Since SXS's usually have smaller diameter tubing and that's what the bed rack is made of, it made a clean solution super easy.

[IMG]Untitled by Michael Halat, on Flickr

After lots of cutting/measuring/testing I burned them in:

I also finally mounted two ammo cans in the bed to replace my tool box. One will store tools, the other, recovery gear.

[IMG]Untitled by Michael Halat, on Flickr
[IMG]Untitled by Michael Halat, on Flickr

After that all that was left is to test it out and hope that the rear bar would actually close on the bike like I had intended.

[IMG]Untitled by Michael Halat, on Flickr

    And SUCCESS!

[IMG]Untitled by Michael Halat, on Flickr

I tested several configurations, trying to decide which side of the bed the bike was better off at.

[IMG]Untitled by Michael Halat, on Flickr
[IMG]Untitled by Michael Halat, on Flickr

I also did some testing on where the bed electronics will be housed, where the high lifts new home will be, and where I will potentially put camp gear.

I've been wanting to pick up some ammo cans that size. Looks like they fit perfectly in that spot.

I may steal that idea to make a removable bed rack for my truck with those tube clamps. I still use my truck as a truck and having to haul around sheets of plywood, drywall and boards is a PITA. Now that I no longer live less than a mile from a home depot my redneck way of doing it before won't work, and I don't want a bed rack for wheeling.

    Thanks for the ideas man!

I installed 2nd Gen bed rails and modified my rack to attach to them. Six bolts are removed and the rack comes off.

it was tough to find, I’ll send a link tomorrow to the cans

I do but usually only for places I’ve been, might make an exception for this though

yeah removing mine is similar too, only 8 bolts and the rack is gone. Not sure what is more difficult, that setup or a tube disconnect setup
