Mine does not stretch. Its similar to the webbing used in ratchet straps. Its not the type of strap that slingshots you out of the mud.

It looks like the Amazon link shows a different strap than i have. Mine doesnt have metal hooks on the ends.

If you're worried about losing it, you can always get a bolt shackle. Won't do anything for theft, but it can't fall off if you properly secure the cotter pin.

Don't buy cheap generic recovery gear. Consider this gear similar to rock climbing ropes and parachutes. Don't cheap out. Your life, or other people's lives truly and honestly can depend on this equipment. That doesn't mean go out and buy the most expensive gear you find. You don't necessarily need an $80 Factor 55 shackle to be safe, but don't get that anonymous Chinese made piece of crap from Ebay, either. Smittybilt seems like a good company with decent prices and stand behind their equipment.

Also, there is a difference between a tow strap and a recovery strap, sometimes called a snatch strap. Tow straps do NOT work well with dynamic loads, whereas the snatch straps are designed to stretch slightly to store energy that will help pull a stuck vehicle out. I have a 3" tow strap that has something like 30,000#+ rating. I'm honestly regretting it, and thinking I should have gotten a snatch style strap. But don't get the biggest snatch strap you can. Get one rated for your vehicle size, for Tacos that's usually the 17k# class. Too big of a strap and it won't stretch and store energy properly.

I bought a couple 7/8" smittybilt D-rings for my front bumper (CBI Moab).

There really is no reason to keep the D-rings stored on the bumper aside from looks (shiny red D-rings are a quintessential brolander look). Leaving them on your bumper/recovery points is unnecessary. I can't think of a situation where you wouldn't be diving into your bag of recovery goodies anyway (to get your tow strap, snatch block, gloves, etc...), so just leave them in the bag. They are noisy, scratch your D ring/bumper, and can get stolen.

For $25 I doubt it. That really just looks like a cheap static tow strap.

Do not buy that strap. Those hooks are completely unnecessary and add an extra element of failure and danger. It's is also pretty short. 30' is a pretty standard length. You'll find 20' too short.

    Go for something like this:

    https://www.amazon.com/Rhino-USA-Re...id=1552077474&s=automotive&sr=1-3-spons&psc=1

    Or better yet, this:
    https://www.amazon.com/ARB-Accessor...atch+strap&qid=1552077576&s=automotive&sr=1-6

A month from now you're not even going to notice the extra $30 you spent.

I concur. And out on this coast they can rust together, so just another hassle to deal with during a recovery, which are already a bit stressful.

Do not back off the pin on shackles. It may be common practice to do so but the rated WLL (working load limit) is with the pin tight. Hence why quality shackle pins have a small hole in it but a adjustable wrench will also make it easy to loosen. As I posted earlier in this thread is Crosby's web site provides a ton of valuable info.. A little reading and self education will serve all of us well.

I was looking at the ARB recovery pamphlet and was surprised to see they recommend backing off half turn as well. When I'll have some time I'll take a photo of that section.

This. backing off the pin is purely for convenience.

"it's too tight, I can't loosen it with my fingers after a pull" :angrygirl:

I mean, you have a choice between needing a tool to loosen the pin or have a higher potential for a shackle fail... hmmm....:der:

Seems like the choice is pretty obvious here.

higher potential for shackle failure, obviously.

The Rhino USA is a tow strap not a recovery strap, despite the product title.
