    It's based on the power of the motor and the strength of the gear box, then you use the appropriate rope/cable.

    Not having read the whole thread...

    Steel shackles and soft shackles are both necessary items in your recovery kit. There are times when one is beeter then the other. Me? I have 3 or 4 of each.

    People who only carry soft shackles "because they're safer" likely don't have enough experience to understand they are only safer in some situations. In other situations they are almost certainly worse. This idea that synth is universally safer is just not correct.

    Since the advent of synth winch line, some people think that steel cables are all of a sudden less safe, however I would contend that's only true if you make a habit out of standing too close to your line while winching. As with anything, if you use it improperly, it's unsafe no matter what it's made of.
