Prayers on the way! Keep up hope! My mom had a stroke in April 2009 and she regained almost complete control of her right side - still has some lack of function in her right arm and minor cognitive impact...but she's living on her own and doing well.

there were no symptoms, no TIA's. He suffered a massive stroke so they say. I flew down and rented a vehicle. The day was a whirlwind- thank you all for your kind words- while I'm supporting my mother and what she's going thru, it means alot to know people have my back. It's tough- I feel the need to grieve about this situation, but I cannot- I feel like a ticking time bomb, butI need to be strong for her. It's still early yet- tomorrow we sign a DNR in case... But, the VA in North Carolina beats the crap out of the places up in Mass. The social worker has been talking to my mother about ramps, free visiting nurses, housekeeping and the like. My mother is dead set on him coming home to her- they live alone and there's no family or support network. So, I see her needing him here. Otherwise, he's in a home somewhere, and she's all alone. An I cannot bring her to my home where all of our friends and family are without him. Tough spot. Not to mention they have NO cash, just did a bankruptcy over a year ago, etc... Not sure where to go from here, and I'm not much good down here for just 4 days. I cannot skip too much work or I'll be homeless. Sucky situation. If they were closer, it'd be easier to deal with.
BTW- he is 65 in october and was retiring in January. Vietnam Vet, worked all his life and now here's his retirement. Figures.

My aunt had a massive stroke 7 months ago. They didn't think she would make it for almost a week.
It was a long, hard road to recovery, but she is back to her normal self now and living at home. There is plenty of hope, don't get down!

I cannot thank all of you enough. We received a call at about 5:30 this am. My mother couldn't handle it, so I had to tell the doctors to stop CPR. We were going in today to see him again and to sign the DNR. Knowing my father, this was the best decision all around. I'm still in shock and typing this, believe it or not, is actually helpful. Again, I thank you all, and we now have to begin the next phase of this.

I can not imagine nor comprehend what you are going through. My only advice is to try and stay strong for those around you. A reassuring voice in times like this could go a long way. Best of luck to you!
