I'm about to re-gear my truck so I'm planning on using a Dakota Digital SGI-5E to correct the speedo/odo. I've good luck in the past using these units on 1st gen Tacomas and I've read that some have used them on 2nd gens. I'm having trouble finding a write up or at least what color wire the speed sensor wire is on the truck and where is the best place to splice into it. My truck is an Auto Trans V6 4WD.

No problem, brother. I think most 2nd gen guys run the Hypertech calibrator. I'll be installing mine this weekend.

Oh ok. I’ll look into that one. Is it more plug of a plug and play unit? Where’d you order yours from?

Yeah. It's plug and play. I ordered mine from @eccracer104. He's the Auto Anything forum rep.

Sweet. I’ll check into that if I can’t figure out wiring the DD. When I used one on a couple first gens it was pretty simple and straight forward. I’m hoping it’ll be the same with my ‘06

I finished up the re-gear over the weekend and have been breaking in the new gears this week. Before the re-gear with 265.75.16 s/t maxx tires my speedo was pretty close to spot on. I expected the new 4.56 gears to make my speedo run much faster than I was actually driving. Using the same GPS app as I did before the gears, to my surprise, the speedo is still the same dead on. Do these 2nd gens measure speed differently than 1st gens? In my first gen with 4.88 and 33's I was running close to 15mph off since it's measured from the speed sensor gear in the trans/transfer case.

I'm happy I don't need to do any speed calibrating.

Automatic trans 2nd gens use the wheel speed sensors to determine speed. Manual trans trucks use a speed sensor in the trans or transfer case depending on if it's a prerunner or 4x4.

Did you already buy the Dakota Digital unit? If so, I'll take it off your hands. The Hypertech I bought was dead when I installed it. I could connect to it with the computer and program it, but the speedo was dead when I had it in the truck. I called Hypertech's CS to see if there was anything that I could troubleshoot. They told me if I could connect to it but it wasn't outputting that it was defective, then they hung up on me. I called up AutoAnything's CS and requested an RMA and refund.

Damn that’s jacked up. Good to know for future reference.
Fortunately I hadn’t bought the DD yet. Good to know as well on the speed sensor differences. So the only thing that’ll affect the speedo reading is change in tire size then?

For an automatic, yes. Since it's measuring wheel speed directly, the change of revolutions per mile with different tire sizes is the only change.

For a manual, it's reading driveshaft speed, so gearing and tire size effect the speed reading.
