Hey everyone I'm Drake and new on here, and I definitely need some help and or some advice. So I'll do my best to mak
it quick. So long story short I had this genius idea. By the way I have a 2020 SR5 Tacoma I've been planning on installing a new sound system. So from everything I looked into said for me to basically take a wire coat hanger and put it through the Boot on driver side to pull the wires through. Well I made a poor decision and decided to take the end of the hangar and heated one end thinking it would go through a lot easier and it would be much faster. Well It went like I hoped except I pushed to hard it went straight through and straight into the wiring harness damaging a bunch of wires. And now the truck won't start. I turn over the Key and the Stereo comes on but nothing else the gas gauge, speedometer, etc everything is out. What I noticed was the Ignition isn't reading the key has been turned over because I'm sure everyone is aware when you turn off the ignition and Leave the key in the ignition and open the driver's door it beeps. Well it's doing that when the key is turned on as well. I checked all the fuses, I believe I Fixed any of the wires that we're damaged and still nothing . What did I do and how do I fix it. please help.

Have it towed to the dealer, contact your insurance and file a claim. Not going to harp on you, but what were you thinking lol.

No input on fixing the damage, but I would suggest using a Plastic Zip Tie the next time you try to run wires, its rigid enough and will not damage any wires.

Unless you’re well versed in wiring repairs. Leave it to the professionals at this point. Some of those wires can only have so much resistance and improper wiring repairs will cause even more problems. At this point Toyota will only replace the harness to avoid liabilities. You can either pay out of pocket for the repair or go through your insurance. Replacing that harness will require a lot of labor.

Lol Ya, problem is I hate just letting it go and have someone else fix My F up. I just can't. I feel I'll figure it out at some point now the cost isn't what I'm worried about. It's the value of what I've gained by it. because now I've learned from my experiences and mistakes and gained more knowledge..

If this was me I’d probably try and fix it myself. It’s not like you’ve cut a bunch of wires. All you did it melt off the insulation on a few and now they are shorting together.

Other than trying to start it have you looked the damage? Might be a bit difficult to see but I’d try that first. Otherwise this is going be in the 1000’s from the dealer. :spending:

Welcome to the forum :hattip: Sorry this has to be your first post.

A trip to the dealer, new wiring harness and an insurance claim is probably the best way to go. These trucks have incredibly sensitive electrical systems, it is easy to frost expensive parts.

Props to you for owning it on your first post, so many folks open with a bunch of questions and many posts later say "well I did do...." :smack:

For some reason everyone goes in where the wires run in. When I ran my power wire I removed the blank rubber grommet behind the master cylinder . Once you remove it it’s like a nipple . Then you can drill out the nipple and run the wire through it and this way your not near the harness

I guess if it was me. Of course I have absolutely without a doubt ever done anything stupid to my truck. I would see what you melted. Separate all the wires and tape over the melted pieces. Especially if you did not break a wire. If you fried something it is already fried. I am a f it up myself fix it myself type. If you’re going for insurance to cover it why not try something first. Especially if you can get to the harness and see what you did

Right on thanks everyone this is my first time on any forums this is pretty badass being able to chat with some fellas (& ladies if there is any) brain storming some ideas giving advice. So I got under the dash found the wires that were damaged. There was 2 wires that seemed to have to have the most damage a purple and a white these 2 wires were braided or twisted together The insulation was melted now idk if that was because of them coming in to contact or my brilliant idea of using a hot rod to go through everything. Does anyone know what those wires are? I separated them and taped them. There was a blue 1 that I nicked a red 1 and a green 1 those 3 are thicker gauge wire but they didn't seem to have came into contact with anything else. Someone said the AM1 fuse my truck doesn't have an AM1 inside the cab fuse panel the AM1 spot is crossed out and there is a AM2 under the hood which is a square 30 amp fuse but it seems to be fine. I Read in another forums a guy kinda did the same thing I did but installing a light bar. Am I able to put pics and links in my posts. Sorry computers Internet all this technology. I'm a freaking cave man what ever happened to just buying a damn Chilton's Manual

Thanks again anyone have any idea about the wires, I have trouble reading schematics that will take me forever to read. I don't mind learning but I don't exactly have the time at the moment
