Interesting anecdote. Tonight I go to the store, listening to NPR (don't judge me). I get the groceries, start the truck, and dark blank screen, no backlight. Blue icons are lit, but black screen. I wait a couple minutes, turn truck back on, nothing. Repeat. Nada. I'm thinking great. One month in, and the stereo is a lemon. So I start driving home. Drive takes about 10 minutes, and 5 minutes in, the screen lights up, Android starting. The only change is a reset clock to 5AM.

Anyone else get to enjoy this?

I get the occasional black screen on start up when I make short trips. I just reset it and it turns back on.

Goes to the head unit. they stopped the mirror after 2013. I dig the mirror but have it setup so it shows in the mirror and head unit on my 2013. I had swapped mine out for a 2015 HU a couple years back before this one.

I will give this a try tomorrow. I have the same harness you guys got now so hopefully it works. part of me was second guessing it since some of the wires in the factory were going to empty spots in the new canbus harness. I will see how it goes. Either way promising.

Its interesting the 2013 uses Canbus but the 2015 does not. Is your a JBL system? I am trying to figure out why some need the Canbus and some don't. The wiring for my 2015 does not show any Canbus wires going to the headhunt.

I was running a 2015 HU just like you so its the same scenario. The thing they are saying from the vendor is that the Canbus whether you have JBL or not has support to retain the rear view camera and pre set steering controls. For the Dasaita that is what they give you where the Seicene they have the piece you showed me before. So technically it does not need the Canbus but he way they built thats what can be used as well (only for Dasaita in this case). I have had a 2013 HU, 2014 non nav, 2015 Nav and was going to fit a 2017 Nav unit in my truck and all technically worked without Canbus in OEM form.

I think the big difference in our setups is Dasaita vs Seicene (I do have the Seicene adapter on order that I was going to try but that shit is slow to arrive)

I get the differences in supplier but the 2015 and 2013 don't have Canbus wires in the stock wiring harness so I don't get why you would need a Canbus module. The reverse camera is just a 6v switch and video +/- and the steering wheel controls are resistive through out all the years I have seen.

In no wiring diagram have I seen the toyota Canbus (CanHi and CanLow) wires in the radio harness.

There is also a setting to change between using Canbus and SWC. I think if you don't have the JBL system yours should work without the Canbus with a settings change. The rear camera you would just need to properly wire it.

I had the regular cable on SWC and most settings worked that you experienced. I just connected the canbus again and did change that setting to canbus from swc and then went in and was able to program all my buttons on the canbus and everything works. even the buttons that you had to modify to work, work with the can bus, programed it to up/down/left/right enter, return and a bunch of buttons. At first it worked but limited settings on the canbus and once I updated it from swc to canbus or canbus to swc (forgot which way need to check) I was able to customize much farther than the non canbus setting. Camera works too.

The canbus option seems to give you much more flexability. Works navigating the UI and even navigating carplay if you program the buttons to navigate. I programed the up/down L/R to navigate then the long press works the forward track/back ward track.

In a nut shell I now have way more functionality then previous non canbus setup and even more than the factory radio.

I’ll test out my setup for the front camera that had other shortcuts. May not work due to conflicting canbus settings since it had its own canbus for camera switching but we’ll see.

SWC setup. Some are duplicated I think due to canbus and non canbus setting.

Can't really explain that but you just do not use the extra JBL plugs that are included. Something in the canbus (and thats where my knowledge lacks) seems to have extra support regardless of the original having any canbus.

I guess its misleading to call it a Canbus adapter when it doesn't really connect to the Canbus system. But if it works it works.

I can see how it will fix the steering wheel controls as the RAV4 and Corrolla use the same steering wheel buttons as our trucks. This is why I have a Corolla/Rav4 steering wheel on my truck and it swapped with no wiring differences. Its really just adding the SWC3 wire but I guess the "Canbus adapter" takes the 3 SWC wires and translates them.

So I guess you can purchase the rear camera adapter and add resistors for SWC3 wire or buy the Canbus adapter.

all in all we both came out with the same functionality as all my buttons work and work with CarPlay also.

Yah seems like both work out well. If you order at least the Dasaita they should ship you the canbus converter deal for 2012 or newer trucks. I also ordered the adapter you used and was going to go that route. All in all its on the right path now.

You can tell they setup the radio for 2005-2011 then kind of kept selling it as its not as clear as JBL vs non-JBL. Even shows for the 2nd gen with the piss poor faceplate they give us. The 3rd gen guys lucked out with being able to retain the factory face plate for the Entune Premium HU.
