Dash cam - how effective is a rear camera?

I've read that the rear camera has a pretty limited viewing with Tacomas because of the bed/tail gate. I'm struggling with buying a single or dual system.

I started shopping with a budgetary figure in mind and have already shot way by that, because I'm opting for higher resolution/quality. Also, I didn't originally figure on having to buy a filter/lens, larger endurance memory card, additional power cables, etc.. These adders add up quickly and can kill a budget.

The three cameras I have in mind are all Viofo:

- A119V3
- A129 Pro (front only)
- A129 Pro (dual)

I know there is a A129 both single and dual, but they only have 1080p video. I want the higher quality (1440p for the A119V3 or true 4K for the A129 Pro).

After a lot of research I've picked these for their "bang for the buck" and high quality video. There are a million different brands/models out there, but these are the most appealing to me.

So, my question to you guys is this: Is it worth getting the rear camera, or do you feel the front one only is the way to go? I'm currently thinking the rear is a "nice to have", but doesn't really provide much benefit as compared to a front facing only.

Actually looking at the same. I have the regular a119 up front only. I am pretty impressed with the resolution but I like that idea of having a rear cam as well. I am hung up on wether I need 4K or not.

 

I have both front and rear cameras and while the rear is nice to have, it’s definitely not necessary for me. My limo tent makes it basically worthless at night but I do get a fair bit of viewing area during the day. I suppose it would be beneficial in states with front and rear license plates.

 

I liked the rear cam when I had it. Now that I have a swingout and a softopper the rear cam became useless. Instead I flipped it around so it records the inside of the cab

 

Try not to get too hung up on 4k vs 1080. A good quality 1080 sensor will give you a better output than a cheap 4k sensor, particularly in lower-light situations.

For what it's worth, a rear camera can have a usable view if you mount it up high. If you use a camera that has to have its own mount to hang from, you won't get much of a view. The best variety is the type with the adhesive mount right above the lens.

 

I ended up getting both front and rear cameras and yes, the rear camera doesn’t show the best video due to the length of the camera but at least it can prove someone rear ended you if it ever does happen.

I went with 2CH because it gives you more coverage..
Would suck to get a 1ch cam then get rear-ended.
Also like posted above it covers the bed of the truck and anything in the canopy.
