Somebody said they liked this thread...I started it and have learned a tremendous amount from reading the posts. Just ordered the Hero 4 Silver from Amazon ($329) with some accessories to make it viable as a dash camera. i had been watching it on Amazon for some time and yesterday it jumped from $319 to $329 so I "pulled the plug" (wilh my luck it probably be $309 tomorrow). Ordered it using American Express as they double the warranty and replace it if damaged (or maybe lost). A friend ordered an expensive weed eater and ran over it with his truck. AMEX replaced it with no hassle. The GoPro was more expensive than most dedicated dash cams but I will use it for other things as well. Since I started the thread I will report on how the GoPro works as a dash cam when I get it set up.

Another member started a thread entitled "Go Pro". There is some good information there as well including a picture of a GoPro Silver mounted in a '16 Tacoma.

I started this thread and my new GoPro Silver 4 with batteries/charger, wrench, mount, 3 and 6 foot cords (one right angle as suggested on this forum) and other stupid sh!t I probably don't need will be delivered today (Amazon Prime). As I stated before, my choice of the GoPro was because I plan to use it more for other reasons and not a fully dedicated dash cam. I will report how it works...

Again, thanks for all the great posts!

Using a Hero+ in looping mode @ 30fps/1080. Works great as a dash cam. Runs 2 hrs per charge. Looking to tap into map light wiring for a power source. Avoid dome light power as it is microprocessor controlled to dim and turn off.

GREAT defensive driving. Looked like an ass-clincher. What were those beeps right before braking?

Since this is a dedicated dash camera, it has sensors built in and automatically detected an "event" when I started braking hard. When an event is detected, it separates the clip into its own for easy locating. Other than that, it records normal 1 minute clips.

I just have it setup to beep when an event is detected. I also have it set up to beep and create an event of I go over 90MPH, because personally, if I'm going over 90mph in the truck, there's a problem.

These are the reasons a dedicated dash camera is better than a GoPro.

You said it shows speed tracking, but I didn't see it. Can the street guardian be taken out and mounted on something else like a quad or dirtbike, (or on a helmet?)

It is encoded but can only be viewed using certain players that recognize the GPS data. I use DataKam (I think) on my Mac.
I don't think it would be very compatible with action sport filming. Definitely not made for that.

    This is the BlackVue DR650GW-2CH

It had front and rear cameras that record in tandem, GPS tracking (That is how the speed is calculated), WiFi connectivity and can very easily be hardwired into the Tacoma. I spent about 3 months doing research on Dash Cameras and the different features and quality. This is the one that i chose based on that research. Alot of people tend to go with larger name brands for comfort, but after using a GoPro Hero 4 Black as my DashCam, i needed something more dedicated and purpose built.

After I witnessed a drunk driver total his car and almost kill an entire family, i finally pulled the trigger. One of the best investments that I have made for the truck. The GoPro is great, but it isnt a dedicated dash camera and doesn't have the features that this does. (parking mode being a HUGE one...). I chose to have front and rear, but the DR650GW-1CH is a one camera unit that is front only. Your choice...

Try lowering your EV setting down 1 or 2 notches. The white balance is off.. make sure to compare your video at night so it's not too dark.

I have tinted windows, so its up higher so that you can still see clearly at night.

That my good friend is called "distracted driving"... In Canada you go to jail for that... STOP talking on the phone while driving and save some kids life, OK?
