So who has installed dash cams, and what do you like or dislike about the cams you installed?

My reason for asking is that I was rear ended Wednesday evening and the guy who hit me filed a claim against my insurance for the damages to his car. He is claiming I caused the accident by making a sudden lane change and braking right in front of him. Even a front video would have showed that I did not make a lane change, and ended this quickly. USAA will most likely deny his claim, but this may complicate getting his insurance to pay for repairs. Good thing I have collision coverage.

I've been looking for awhile too. I started here http://dashcamtalk.com/

Probably run Russian's as they are all over dash cams :)

I haven't decide yet. Was thinking about using iPhone for front facing and only putting one facing rear as you always have your phone on your but it's a pita to start to software every time so I'll probably go 2.

Right now I want to get at least a forward looking camera, but eventually want to add rear and maybe one inside the shell in case someone breaks in. I have ordered a Crimestopper DR-220 to try out. It is a pretty clean install and should look almost OEM, so no worries someone breaks in to steal the camera. Insurance fraud is on the rise in this area and while this one should not be a major problem. I do not want to get caught like this again, good thing here is there are no witnesses. So my word against his, and the damage pretty much spells out what happened. My rear end and his front end.

I want to see you drive after consuming an average of 4 liters of vodka a day.

I have been using one for over a year now..Overall the picture quality isn't great but it will be better then nothing.

It came in handy when some dumb lady tried to cut me off and rubbed her fender on my tire. I'll post the video when I find it.

If he rear-ended you, it's his fault. I'm pretty sure that's the case in all fifty states. That being said, I use this http://www.amazon.com/Mobius-Action-Camera-1080P-Sports/dp/B00DP1WYD2. I have two of them. One is pointing at my drivers window, I call it my 'cop cam'. The other is pointing forward. Both are mounted with Velcro on my mirror. They are small and very configurable. They also record both video and audio.... They are set to shut off and turn on with the ignition and are hard wired so they charge while the truck is running...

That is the law in CA, and a cop said to me. If you are rear ended, 99.999% of the time it is the fault of the car that hit you. I had been in that lane for well over 3 miles, so this should not be a major problem. But it is a PITA that means a few more hoops to jump through. Though it appears that my insurance company is going to deny his claim, just need to see what his company does about the damage to my truck. Insurance fraud is really on the rise in this area, so I was already looking into a dash cam of some type as additional insurance against something like this situation.

hid head lights, hid fog lights, always on fog lights, bed lights
to be more precise, if a line of cars are stopped at a red light and a car comes speeding down and hits a car, that then hits the car in front, which then hits the car in front, etc. The last car is liable to pay for the damages of all the cars in front.

I also have been looking at the dash cams.
Still trying to decide which one.

So many crazy drivers around here, had one cut me off while I was in a turn lane, he didn't want to get in line, truck was only three months old.
I had to brake very hard and serve toward the concrete curb, thought the guy hit my front bumper, turned out I just hit the concrete curb, of course he drives off as I am getting out of the truck to look for damage.

I did follow him to make sure, the look on his face was priceless, every turn he made I was there with him.

I run a GoPro on the dash and one facing backward on the rack on my bed. Run both cameras with the WiFi remote.
My drives are almost never more than 35-40 tops and I keep charged batteries in the truck all the time and just exchange them out.

I find with the rear facing camera I get tailgated much less for some reason.

I have a polaroid (yes they still exist) xs100 action cam mounted to my rearview mirror. I find that most of the time I am too lazy to use the camera except on long road trips (neglected to use it yesterday and there was an accident right in front of me and I was almost involved in it). I definitely suggest something that is auto on/off with the truck and overwrites the data automatically.

    ^^ That is true ^^

I was first in line of three cars hit from behind by some idiot on the freeway a few years ago. The driver that hit the first car in back hit him so hard that he pushed him into the next car, then the next car, which then hit me. The driver that caused the accident was at fault. We were in stop and go traffic (stopped at the time) and I guess he was just in the "go" part.

I use a GoPro that I have mounted near my rear view mirror. Facing the windshield. Works fairly well. I ran power to it so I don't have to worry about it dying. Just a habit...turn truck on, turn camera on. I have a 32gb card, so I only end up clearing it once a week. If something happens, I take it off and save it to my iPad or computer. I've caught a couple accidents, DUI's, funny road rage...you name it.

I am looking at all options right now, though a rearward facing camera inside the cab is not an option for me. My shell has no windows, solid doors all around.

there is a thread on the T4R.org forums I have been posting about my dashcam life cycle.

going from using my cellphone to a dedicated dashcam.

I am looking to upgrade my current dashcam in the 4Runner and moving my old one to the warden's Tacoma.
