I am sure that this has been covered but I could not find anything.

I bought a locking gas cap and installed on my 2012 PreRunner DCSB, everything was fine for about a day. Yesterday I start up the truck and the CHECK ENGINE light came on along with the TRAC OFF light. Thinking that the new gas cap may have triggered the light I put the original cap back on and so far the lights are still on. Is this something that the dealer will have to diagnose? Any help you can can provide would be appreciated.

If you have solved the issue with the cap (likely) the light should go off after some predetermined number of key starts and the ECU is happy it's fixed.

Or you can pull the negative battery cable for a couple of minutes and clear the code.

Or you can have a parts house read your codes for free, verify what number it is and it's associated with the gas cap, then clear the code.

Or you can invest in some form of scan tool (like a ScanGaugeII) and do the above steps yourself, as well as have additional info on the operation of your truck.

This just gives you reason to get a scan tool! You can get even the most basic 20$ one at walmart and it will read basic codes like a gas cap and allow you to reset any check engine light. Personally I use a bluetooth one with my phone and it works awesome

    :hattip:

Get the scan tool anyway. Maybe not for this incident, but just because.

Even a ScanGuage II will cost less than a diagnostic trip to a dealer like you were considering. And since its not Toyota specific, you can move it to any OBDII vehicle you wish.

I keep a Code reader in every OBII vehicle .

    Makes things so much easier

Even an Amazon special code reader is better than nothing. It'll come in handy down the road. Even if you don't think you'll use it a lot if a friend's car/truck throws a code and you have a $20 reader to tell them a fuse is blown they'll be endlessly grateful.
