Ok.. let me start, thank you all for being available for non members to research while out and about.. 2ndarily, this is going to be a story as much as asking what might be up.. so lets get started..
We have a 2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD offroad 4WD with about 107K miles (13k put on this trip I will be referencing) it has been modified to handle weight withs springs, shocks, leaf's and a regear at 5.29 nitro gears... all in prep to a trip to the arctic ocean, and many rugged highways in Canada/Alaska and Montana..
We had gone up the Dempster Hwy in Canada and I felt a hum/rumble in the rear end.. but couldn't trace it.. just a weirdness.. but it seemed to be driving ok.. we went up to Deadhorse up the Dalton and back down, then about halfway down a bunch of dashlights came on, ABS, Traction control, brake (only these lights) had no internet and no way to research but when we did I dove in as much as I could on the side of the road.. the Dealership in Fairbanks couldn't take us until Sept. 20th (it was then July 26th)

Making out way to the dealership in Anchorage I went to this site (Tacoma world) and pulled a rear wheel sensor (Right) and diff oil came out.. now the rumble made sense.. I did lose a rear axle seal and bearing at least on the right but when oil came out we limped into Anchorage.. when some dollars later I had new (aftermarket) wheel bearings and seals, lights were gone, we headed up the road, when around 60 or so MPH the lights mentioned above came on, plus the check engine light and the speedometer stopped working. the truck drove oK except we had no traction control or 4wd.. we made out way back to Anchorage where I bought 2 rear speed sensors Right and Left, replaced the right rear, and found out that the dealership had installed the bearing on the left rear 180 degrees off and due to the configuration of the wiring only the right rear speed sensor would fit on the left rear. I did not have the ability to clear the codes at that time.. I do now though, after about 1000 miles we took it back to the dealer as we continued on as our vehicle was also our living quarters with dogs... the dealer cleared the codes, drove it around and nothing happened except a steering sensor now (steering angle sensor not initialized) we headed on our way and almost exactly at 64 Mph, the lights mentioned above all came on except now i had a tool to clear the codes and we regained speedometer, traction control, no ABS lights, so we limped around AK and came home through Canada at less than 60 mph mostly, oh and the dealership took the aftermarket sensors off and put the factory ones back in..

I hope that's not too much information and I stand by to answer more questions if needed.

Sounds like one or both bearings were installed on the wrong side, there are left and right bearings.

I can't be sure on this but based on your description of the work that was done, the fact that one bearing is installed incorrectly and that the codes only come up over a certain speed lead me to believe that may be your issue.

The wheel speed sensors read spead as well as direction of rotation, over a certain speed the ABS module runs a rationality check on the sensors. If the rotation of one or more sensors doesn't agree with the actual direction of the vehicle it will set codes for those. When you have an issue with the rear speed sensors you will get a P0500 in the PCM because vehicle speed comes from the rear ABS sensors.

If you have the wrong side bearing installed the sensor will read the incorrect direction of rotation.

welllll hellll.. Is there anyway to tell from the outside? I will be pulling the wheels off and inspecting brakes cleaning gunk etc... other than the wheel speed sensor port on the forward face of the left rear? the Toyota Dealer in Anchorage bearing press was broken and they had to take it to another shop to have it done..

we've wondered even as of today on a test drive purposely trying to get it to throw the code .. we chatted about wheel rotation direction and sensors and speed..

I mean the sensor hole being in the incorrect position is a good clue that something is off.

If you have a scanner that can read ABS data you can see if the sensors are all in agreement of the direction of rotation.

I took screen shots of the error's when they showed, and did graph the rear sensors right and left, they did match each other, but we only compared the rear two, we couldn't graph the front 2 and the rear 2 at the same time.. we were afraid to mess with it until we got home.. so we just cleared the codes and drove slower than 60 mph.. it's trouble shoot time now though..

There's several PIDs for each sensor, we would be interested in the Forward/Reverse PIDs.

I don't know exactly where to look other than these codes came up while driving yesterday..

Using a INNOVA 5610 purchased in Anchorage AK to clear the codes so we didn't go into what i called the Limp Mode..

at 64 MPH all these codes show up

    ABS/VSC/Trac
C1445 Vehicle Driven with Steering Angle not initialized
C1412 Rear Speed Sensor LH Performance
C1411 Rear Speed Sensor RH Performance

    Transmission
P05003 Vehicle Speed Sensor "A" no signal

    Power Source Control
    B2283 Vehicle Speed Sensor

    Navigation System
    B15C2 Speed Signal Malfunction

    Engine
P050031 Vehicle Speed Sensor "A" no signal

#5 seems to match your symptoms exactly, I still would like to see the wheel direction data PIDs for the ABS.

it does.... #5 seems to match your symptoms exactly, I still would like to see the wheel direction data PIDs for the ABS.

How does my scanner (INNOVA 5610) show the wheel direction data PIDs?? or how can I capture that data and provide it?

    You have been incredibly helpful,

Go to live data in the ABS, they should be there. If they aren't then your scanner doesn't support them but they are valid PIDs

After trouble shooting today, it appears I do not have the ability to show forward or reverse PID's, but I can show speed.. images below.. what I did today, we took it out purposely drove over the 64 mph trigger point and every time it lit up the dash lights, I would clear the codes and do the live data and saw no reduction on speed on any of the sensors it may be that the 1 second measurement can't capture.. I also had 2 spare wheel speed sensors all for the right side however as a left cannot be used on the left rear due to the wiring connector lack of clearance up against the brake housing.. in the photo attached this is the left rear wheel and the Speed Sensor is on the front and it will only take a right speed sensor.. so...

I really think the incorrect/incorrectly installed bearing(s) is your issue.

Your not gona see a dropout in the wheel speed because the reverse rotation signal is internally generated by the sensor adding spikes to the rising and falling edges of the signal waveform to tell the ABS which way the wheel is turning. I'm thinking they are always showing reverse rotation but it only runs the rationality check above 64 mph.

This is from my 2nd gen but I'd imagine 3rd gen uses a similar signal.

Thank you so much for the help.... If we hadn't had to leave Ak to come home and have our house on wheels in the shop for multiple days... we had no place to stay without spending hundreds per day for lodging with dog friendly motels.. I knew it was backwards the minute I bought a new wheel speed sensor and it wouldn't fit as I described.. the dealership assured me that it wouldn't be an issue and they drove it around and had no codes... but they never went over the trigger speed, we weren't up the road 10 miles when it triggered.. I cleared the codes and we limped at less than 60 mph for the next 7K miles, I need to have a discussion long distance it seems..

you have been awesome in helping me work the problem.. thank you again..

No problem, I hope you can get it resolved without a bunch of headaches. Not a good situation to break down on a trip and then have a shop do shoddy work on top of it.

last post maybe LOL. note.. there is a right and left for many parts in this axle assembly.. the dealer ran the diagnostics after my story and it appears to at least the computer there is a signal showing reverse on the rear wheels while actually going forward.. which confirms all of the above.. what I don't know, is / are the part numbers printed on the bearings.. I guess we will find out the dealership in Anchorage obtained after market parts with my approval as the nearest OEM parts would have taken days more to ship from the lower 48, something we couldn't do at the time as our house was also our vehicle and we had 2 dogs.. (try making reservations with two large labradors) I know hindsight is 20/20 and maybe this could have been a preventative item before we left but where do you stop on that? we will get it fixed.. do some more preventative on our own and try to get it as close to go to FL to get to the Key's.. so we can say furthest north and furthest south... (by road anyway) oh.. and on another note.. the fridge and wash machine went kerputz while we were gone too.. when it rains it pours.. but it could always be worse huh?.. thanks again for the help..
