Forgive me if thishas been covered before, but I noticed the dash light are on all the time. I can rotate the dimmer, to turn them off, but why did toyota design it like that?

Their profit margin on light bulbs is staggering.

I noticed that too and I guess it is due to the fact the gauges are in such deep cavities. It seems to help see them better even in the daylight. :)

Doesn't bother me, what bothers me is that damn fog light switch that DOESN"T light up it's impossible to find it at night.

This may sound stupid but you have turned off the headlight switch on the left side of the steering column right? i don't recall mine being on all the time at all, however, if you leave the switch on either running lights or headlights it will leave those dashlights lit up all the time when it has power. A lot of people don't realize that switch is on because when you shut the vehicle off and open the driver's door, all the outer lights automatically shut off instead of beeping at you like some vehicles do instead.

Wow, not much faith in your fellow tacoma owner. Im aware when the lights are on, and when they are off.
I just happened to notice because i park in a dark garage, and its pretty obvious the headlights arent on, but the dash lights are.

Nothing to do with faith -- just covering the basics. You'd be surprised what gets overlooked sometimes.

That old joke about the user calling the helpdesk because the computer won't turn on, and after an hour of troubleshooting it turns out that the building has no power, is true and happens regularly.

oh yeah, the tech says look behind your computer and she says "I can't see anything back there because the lights are off. We lost power a little while ago."

The first notch on the lever does just that, turns on running and dash lights without headlights. I mentioned it because it's easy to overlook since these vehicle automatically shut off their headlights and don't beep at you if you leave that switch on.

I do tech support on DVR's and PC based DVR's and you wouldn't believe the simple questions I have to ask folks. What is really bad is when you ask for the IT person and they answer, that's "me"! I haven't had the question yet though, "where is the "any" key", but I know it's a coming. :)

Personally though I like the dash lights on due to the cave the gauges sit in. Go through a tunnel or under a long overpass and you will be glad they are lit all the time too.

My dash lights are on all the time too. I've noticed while driving through tunnels or under bridges.

Auxilllary backup lights, removed secondary filter,

I like it. The orange color matches my Kenwood and Yaesu HAM radios.

While my truck was in the shop, I drove a 2009 Camry and its dash lights were white and gradually came on at startup.

I like the headlights tuning off automatically. Thats a good thing.
