I'm not sure why I haven't really noticed this sooner, but it seems to be an issue that wont allow me to pass a safety inspection in the state of PA. They use to work just fine about 4 months ago until I decided that I wanted to get a remote start / new stereo installed. I'm sure going to Best Buy is going to be frowned upon here, and I am sorry I didn't do it myself, or go to a specialist other than Best Buy. But... I went to Best Buy and bought a 2 way Compustar Remote Starter, Kenwood DDX9702S (monitor with DVD receiver), and a Maestro SW (for steering wheel controls). I had them install it and everything seemed fine except something was different. When I use to use my old receiver (the one that comes with truck) that unlocked/locked my doors the lights would flash (which lights I'm not exactly sure but I think it was my front and rear turn signal lights). I didn't think this was a big deal because instead of them flashing my horn would sound instead which I didn't like personally but I figured that was just mandatory with the install. So it kinda just grew on me and I got used to it. Four months pass and its time for a inspection. I think I'm gonna pass without any problems but that is not the case because my daylight running lights don't work. I read through my manual to find out that my front turn signals are my daylight running lights, and they they should be on pretty much all the time except when my headlights are on. They use to work fine until I had the install done. I am 95% sure the installers had something to do with this, but I am here to see if anyone as any advice/input on my current situation. I wish I wasn't an idiot and had realized this was gonna be an issue sooner.

100% sure the installers owe you a fix

    drls are bright when on
drls are dim when headlights are on
drls are bright when parking lights on
    drls are turn signals
drls flash when factory keybob button pressed

so they certainly dickered with some wiring controlling one or more of these functions

Yea. Call Best Buy and make an appointment to have it fixed.

Easier than moving to a state with no inspections or no requirements for DRLs.

Update: I checked the fuses and the TRN/HAZ seemed to be fine but I replaced it anyways. I talked with my mechanic and he said that my parking lights not functioning is the reason why my inspection failed. I read the manual again to find out that my marker lights are also my parking lights, and can confirm that they do in fact work fine. But my DRL do not function like 127.0.0.1 mentioned above (turn signals are also drls). So I took it to Best Buy where I am waiting for an answer to see if they can get the DRL to function again. This is like a wild goose chase. If this fails I'm gonna go to the local Toyota dealer and see if they can do something about it. I would try to troubleshoot it myself but honestly I don't even know where to start with the wiring/relays/fuses. Shit is a mystery to me.

Ive been at Best Buy for roughly 2 hours and it doesn't look real promising, he said that my truck may not have DRL but I can clearly remember my turn signals having a double function. Is there any evidence that 2008 models come equipped with the DRL system? Maybe some sort of document or manual stating it comes with it. My manual shows the DRL system and how it works, but it states that some models come equipped with it. I just know when I turned my headlight knob to the bold dot that they came on and now they don't. I'm trying to google as much stuff as I can but I'm not really getting anywhere with my searches.

Any chance you turned off DRL at the switch?

I'm not exactly sure where that switch would be and if there is one on my truck. My guess is that it would be near the fuse box under the steering wheel but I don't see anything that resembles a switch there.

Now I'm confused. If you failed inspection on parking lights, why are you looking for DRLs?

Especially when you say they work.

The tech said he called a dealer out in Phoenix (I live in PA, so all dealers are closed near me at 7pm). He said the dealer ran my vin and said I do not have drls. So I guess them coming on before was magic. I'm not really sure what to do from here. I can't pass a safety inspection because of something I apparently don't have that I did have. I'm running out of options. My next plan is to go to my local Toyota dealer and see what there verdict is. And if that doesn't work I'm just gonna find a mechanic that can give me a sticker without a hassle. I really want to fix the problem but at this point I'm not sure exactly what my problem is or how to tackle it.

On my lowly base '13 they are a clearly marked position on the headlight switch.

Exactly my point Bill, I tried to explain to my mechanic that my marker lights are my parking lights but he disagreed and said that my turn signals being constantly lit are my parking lights. So I read through the manual to find that DRLs are also my turn signals. I mean I'm not claiming to know more than him but I'm pretty damn sure my turn signals being constantly lit are not my parking lights.

Parking lights are front and rear. Are the rears lit too?

    DRLs are front only.

Do your turn signals work fine?

So are you saying that the parking lights are on all the time the truck is on, regardless of switch selection? ie you can't turn them off?

I still don't understand the real problem I guess.

when in park mode, the big amber lights inboard in the headlight assy, should be lit
