The WEP ended on November 30, 2015--si\o it depends on how generous your dealer is feeling...

"safety"is a big Word to Corporate Car makers. The News and comparisons to poor quality and accidents causes are something that they like to avoid. I this case I'd treat this a "safety issue". I'd call Toyota and Tell them your DRLs will not pass inspection and is a safety issue. Ask nicely to see if they can "grant an exception" in your case. If they reneg I'd mention that I you will have to inform the NTSB and Gov agencies of a safety issues and you can let the Gov pursue the issue ....

The local dealer said the warranty expired so they couldn't help. I called corporate and explained my safety issue and they opened a case.
So I'm now waiting to see where this takes me. Hopefully a call to the dealer to do the headlight replacement.

I just got off the phone with a agent from Toyota Corp. They're not going to offer any help with this issue since it is outside the warranty extension, safety issue or not.

I will probably cough out the $500 for a pair of the OEM replacments that are the fix for this melting, install myself.

If there is a future recall on this could possibly get reimbursed for repair according to corp agent.

It's too bad the previous owner didn't address this back in 2015 before time ran out...ugh!

Anyone know if headlights can be changed without pulling my front bumper off?

Some of the video's I've watched show the stock bumper being removed to get to bottom headlight bracket.

Was this a recall on all '16 Tacomas? I haven't gotten anything from Toyota and I've not had any of the lights melting. If there's a possibility this could happed later I'd like to get this fixed now, at their expense and not mine.

Be sure to cc Email toyota corp - and I'd call them back and ask for a name and email address to put in the complaint

    Bump

just picked up a TRD sport grey set for $20
only to find out upon arriving to meet seller, that lens has cracks and one DRL is burned.

Wondering if I can heat and remove the lens, to swap on my chrome light lens
and if the DRL portion can be disassembled, to swap in a good one too

mainly to simply get the grey TRD smoked look, switching from ugly chrome

second question: how long do Toyota TSB's apply?
For example I believe with Audi, it's only under warranty, unless it has a warranty extension.
So if the vehicle warranty is 4yr/50k miles (whichever comes first), then TSB's are only free and paid for by the company while the car is somewhat new and under warranty.

Except for "warranty extensions" such as if a couple specific things have been extended to say, 10 years or 100k mi whichever comes first.
Otherwise, customer has to pay for it out of pocket.
I think at one point Toyota had warranty extension on 4runner dashboards because they kept cracking straight down the middle in the sun.

In my experience, mechanics are car enthusiasts happy to tell you about it, but also need to make their money.
Whereas if you bring your car to a service advisor and ask about any TSB's they have internal access to, they don't really give a shit
and will claim there are none,
    even if there are 20.

The mechanic has access to TSB's on the computer because it's his job to check them to fix issues. So that he does quick 5min due diligence of checking if a car issue is already known and documented by the manufacturer, before diving into a difficult diagnosis attempt.

No idea if service advisors (front end of dealership) have ability to access that on their computer.

I mean yeah they tell you if your VIN has open recall for leaf spring replacement, but that's about it. I'm sure more TSB's exist, that they don't mention.

Then there is "good will" where I think Toyota gives each dealer a budget of money to use at their discretion to cover repairs, though I don't know why the would ever give anyone anything for free in the first place anyway.

Thinking I might have made a mistake and just need to re-sell these TRD lights to get my $20 back, or throw them in the trash and call it a lesson learned. Then maybe buy new DEPO housings for $100ish that are smoked frame.

Read the how too's, stick them in the oven and then pop them apart. If you FUBAR them, you're only out $20.

    will do, thanks

so the oven separates the main lens
do you know if the little DRL rectangle inside can come apart too/separately replaceable on it's own?

People heat them in the oven to retrofit them all the time. I've never done it. There are how to's somewhere here on TW.
