Dazed and confused

95 Tacoma 4x4

Just replaced the 3.4 in my Tacoma with a used engine. Previous engine blew a head gasket. On initial start up, the engine hit a few times then would turnover but not start. Chek engine light flickers when ignition is off, but is not illuminated when the ignition is on. Temp gauge is pegged when ignition is on too. Code reader fails to connect to the computer. I'm stumped.
