Dead 3rd gen engine while off roading.

Quick search of the manual and there is no mention of maximum slope you can ascend. Here is the driving off road portionand and a caution/warning light about being parked on a slope.

 

True, but useless when you stall otherwise on other models.

 

Thanks, good reference. I seen that too, its why I don’t remember seeing any slope figures.

Also you've shown as such, they cannot deny a warranty for just going “off-road” - whoever continues to spout that should read the manual.

 

I think they should change the driving on steep slopes part to say, "do not drive straight up or down steep slopes. Side hill them so you don't get a smoking engine. This way you'll roll over and insurance will total the vehicle for replacement instead of Toyota of America having the replace/warrant your badly designed engine."

 

But then you may get the drums dirty and they’ll void the warranty for abusing it.

Toyota is not alone check Jeep sites Ford and Chevy it is not uncommon these thing are not mountain goats.

 

Nah, I cut my sliders off the day before my frame was inspected and it was obvious I had welded to the frame. I also did a cmc and left it wide open to the elements. They didn't say a word except "it qualifies".

One mod you can do but not sure if smog legal is to relocate the PCV to the front of the valve cover this will alleviate most but not all oil puddling

Remove the valve covers and remove PCV grommet then weld the exposed hole closed . Next with a hole saw cut a new hole the front and reinstall the grommet and PCV

as mentioned you'll still have oil puddling over the rear cylinders valve train and suck oil down the valve guide . Also now going down a steep hill forward you will still ingest oil into the PCV

 

What if you are in a Sport which does not have that gadgetry? How would you know the limits?

The OP also said that it started knocking before the smoke started. Hydro lock? It would take more than a valve stem seal leak to cause that.

 

I get the same oil smoking problem on my Camaro after a hard launch at the track . See the hose going to the valve cover ?? , that's my Pan evac set up or race car PCV set up . The hose goes to one way Reed valve on the header collectors

As exh gasses pulse thru the collector it creates vacuum up to 9"hg enough to remove crankcase vacuum . I need to place the hoses onto the front wall of ea valve cover to keep from ingesting oil so I dont create a cloud of oil smoke at the end of a pass

 

The valve covers are some form of GFRP so they would have to be epoxied to fill the holes.

Have you met AJ? He doesn’t give up easily. On my grill swap, one of the bolts fell and he spent 30 minutes fishing it out.

4x4... Works for me, but I don’t do crazy crawling either. I would had have no problem trying that hill with AJ.

 

I have a 3rd gen and this concerns me, you would think Toyota would treat their loyal followers with a dry sump system. Oil delivery at most angles and "G" forces. If we pay 30 -40K for an off road truck....can't we have off road assurance? C'mon Toyota! Back up that decal on the bed and make a true off roader! Oh, and I would like a 2 inch factory lift with bullit proof tires and cameras front and back and Jerry cans and a factory winch and a front locker and .........

 

I was about to say the same thing. I can’t mention how many times I’ve heard people on this site say that. The god damn truck says OFF ROAD right on the side? It has a locker and crawl control for off road situations. It’s right in the manual they printed. How in the fack can they deny a claim by citing off road use?
