    Hey guys,
    98 3.4L
Daily driver, drove it yesterday. Woke up this morning to what it seemed to be a dead battery. Tried to jumpstart with cables and starter would even turn over, no clicks, nothing. Haven’t noticed any spinning of the starter gear like the armature was stuck or anything. Replaced the battery, same thing. The instrument cluster powers up, ac blower comes on, radio, etc. Zero starter turnover. Tried hitting the starter, no luck.

    Any ideas?

    thanks

Sounds like a bad starter. Jump the starter. If the starter has power going to it and you jump it and still nothing, replace the starter.

As a primary test... if you look at your starter you will see a large diameter cable and a small diameter cable. If you put a jumper wire from one to the other the starter should crank. If it doesnt, hit the starter with a ratchet extension/hammer/something to jar the contacts inside the starter and try it again. If it stilol doent not turn it is more than likley the starter. If it does crank with the jumper wire then you have a control circuit side issue. If an automatic, put her in neutral and see if she cranks, if a manual look at the clucth pedal switch. If she still does not crank let us know an I will post an electrical diagram when I get back on the forum maybe later today.

Rebuilding seats with leather from furniture and extra padding. Might put leather on the dash and other interior parts.
Not hard to fix the starter and alot less money than a new one. The copper contact things woreout on mine at around 450k miles.

Hmmmm. Mine wore out at 58K miles. The truck now has 122K miles. Guess it's time to replace 'em again. Joy.

You driving a manual (with clutch start cancel) or auto?
First make sure your ground connections are GOOD thoroughly. DO the same for both battery leads. While holding key in run position have someone tap starter to see if it'll engage.

The display lights that you get when first turned on - do they stay on when you go to turn the key to the "start" position or do they disappear? Flicker? If so I'd reckon you should check the ignition switch. Hold key in start position when you're attempting to get a crank out of it and jiggle ever so slightly. If that doesn't work then toggle the key a few times and hold it "harder" by a bit to attempt the same. That doesn't work; pull your top/bottom covers off the column and tap with but end of screwdriver (plastic) or small block of wood on the ignition switch WHILE holding it in the start position.

    Report back.
