The second generation Tacomas IMHO were something revolutionary and timeless, that changed the midsize/compact pickup segment. Being able to order an easy to park, top-spec V6 5-seater truck with a 4x4 and manual transmission and decent interior, was very compelling.

That being said, I owned one in base DCSB V6 4x4 6-speed grade and regret being pressured to get rid of it years back. I've had my eye forever on the perfect pre-2012 TRD OR V6 4x4 Access Cab with a 6-speed, but the region of West TX I live in, seems to be devoid of any of these on the used market and is unusually isolated from the rest of the state.

Majority of such trucks seem to be north of the Mason Dixon or the East Coast, which is discouraging in concerns with rust.

A local dealer got a 10 year old Double Cab example on trade, for a new Raptor. I've known the truck (seen it around), hoping that it's now for sale it wouldn't be expensive, but dealer is pricing it at around $23k and not willing to go below high $19.7k.

I'm frustrated, as it's probably the only local example of my ideal age range (2005-11; 2009-11), but the bank is balking at the LTV. KBB says it should be at $15k and NADA at $17k.

Simply trying to cut my expenses massively and car payment down to 40%, from where it is now (nearly $900 a month!) and get into something reliable and lower cost than my existing expensive truck. The idea is to rebuild my finances, while for once owning something I can deal with long term, with little to no issues and be happy with it.

They are also tacking on a few stupid fees (like window etching), totaling around $2252 with TTL, not including the sales prices of $19.7k.

I do want a manual 2nd gen badly, but not to the tune of paying that much for it. Am I being unreasonable as a buyer?

This is why I just bought a new one. Prices are way too high on used models.

    I'd say keep looking

Thanks Stealth, but new ones are still a little too high for my budget at typically $31k+. They are non-existent here and require special ordering, to wait "many" months according to the 2-3 local dealers (one is out of town).

They’re pricing it as equipped thinking someone is going to walk in and be in love with the racks and lights, and has to have it.
You seem to just want the truck itself, and not particularly dying for the accessories.

You won’t get much on a part out and the bank ain’t no fool, I’d pass.

Since nobody asked, that truck is fuck ugly.

Interesting. I had looked at a similarly "over-modded" 2012 Wrangler several months ago. Had death wobble for ages, so I passed. Dealer tried selling it at a very high $28k+. Ended up bringing it down to $22k (no one bit at it), then it got sent to auction and ended up in AZ.

Wonder if I should wait it out and ignore the salesman claiming, "3 other guys asked, but I saved it for you since I know you..."

Theyre trying to charge for all the mods, when in reality they shouldnt add to the value at all. If anything, to me, they would be taking away from the value because I would remove a lot of that crap. Also, how many miles on it?

But FWIW when I bought my truck, dealer was asking 21K before taxes/ fees and I got them down to 19k (ended up being almost 21K out the door) for my 2009 V6 SR5 4x4 with 59,000 miles in late 2017. So truck was 8 years old at the time. Clean and stock except aftermarket wheels and stock size KO2's

That’s a Jeep. Tacoma resale is a whole different animal.

I figured. The El Paso region can be really stupid with how dealerships are. This dealership marks up their Raptors by $15k on average, so I'm hardly even shocked.

I had thought both of them had very high resale? Difference is Tacomas are generally worry free and you don't have to be afraid of working on it yourself, like some overly tech laden trucks.

Toyota for the 3rd gen trucks, has made the manual transmission option a upmarket TRD offering only. I can't find a manual TRD Off-Road Access Cab on the 3rd gen nor do I find it prudent, to get a $30k+ new vehicle. But you are right indeed about the price differential.

6.2L SVT...Not the smartest decision, but honeymoon is over and I want out, before any problems happen. Reaching 100k miles soon.

FWIW I found my 14 base 4X4 6sp 4.0 with 29K miles on it last November for $24K at a Ford dealership. Initially listed at $29.9k, waited them out 6 months (no one wanted a manual), got a call one day before it dropped another $2k to $24k so I went in the next day. If you like it, wait it out. The mods you don’t like come off easy enough.

Well, as a point of reference for Tacoma resale.. my Tacoma got totaled when it was 4 years and 58k miles old.

In that time the market depreciation was only $400.

Thanks, will likely become my game plan. I am repulsed by the bed mods, because I actually need the bed for utility purposes or else, I would forget about trucks altogether. Toyota is the best choice in this regard. Can't stand Nissan Frontier nor would I ever consider a Ranger of the same vintage.

    It's just about for me:

    • V6
    • Manual
    • TRD Off-Road
    • 4x4
    • Between 2005 and 2011 model years
    • No rust risk
The mods don't really enamor me, but the reasonable mileage does.

Wow, I see your point. I think one major problem I already have with the vehicle itself, is an annoying aroma inside (which can be fixed). Secondly, the bed is virtually unusable, thanks to a rack installed there and additional spare added for vanity purposes. It would take some work to remove, if not some damage.

Yeah, the insane bed stuff, I have a truck to haul stuff. Keep a pelican for odds and ends, it fits in the back seat if needed. Was it smoked in?
