The dealer has the right to charge whatever they want, and you have the right to shop elsewhere!

That said, there are some states where it is illegal to take a non-refundable deposit.

Not just a deposit, but a NON-REFUNDABLE deposit. I know it's so cool on this forum to mock any kind of criticism, but the OP is right, it is an unfair practice. When they get the truck in, they know they got you in a corner and can charge whatever they want for the truck because you're not going to want to lose the money you put down on it.

Unfair? Maybe if they were the only dealer in the state.

They aren't. They can practice business in any legal way they choose.

Don't cry about it. Shop elsewhere instead with that energy.

I genuinely can't believe how many times people complain on TW about things being unfair.

Maybe some of you live in your own world, but life isn't about what is fair. You be an adult about it, you don't revert into a child and moan about it.

think about how many times people call and tell them how much they want a truck and then are never heard from again.

What's the average age on TW? 40? 50? You would think that they would have learned by now that life isn't fair

Probably 30s. But either way, some need to grow up a bit and realign themselves with reality and how the world operates. Nobody in the world owes anybody else a damn thing.

If the oven is hot, don't touch it. If you don't like someone, don't talk to them. If you don't like how a business conducts business, don't do business with them.

Make your own fairness. This victim mentality is really unfortunate.

I'm sure if it was refundable it be okay to a certain extent. It's not like they won't be able to turn around and sell it to next guy who walks in if you decide on not buying.

This forum is by no means pro-dealer. We constantly call them "stealerships". As a seller, they're in the business to make a profit. As a buyer, you're responsible for doing your research. "Buyer Beware"

The dealership is not using an unethical tactic (bait & switch, glancing over contract terms, etc) and if you're not willing to agree to terms then there are other dealerships to negotiate with. You don't get what is fair in life, you get what you negotiate.

I didn't take the OP's original statement as moaning. I interpreted his post as a statement to stay away from a dealer who practices less than accommodating processes...

While it is tasteless thing to do it is their right. You gotta vote with your dollars. Sure they can sell the truck to another person but IMO scarcity does not come into play. If someone comes in to buy a truck that isn't even on their lot they are letting cheap money walk away. They are selling a truck they would never have the opportunity to sell if you had not had them order it for you. That truck probably went to some other dealer and lined the pocket of some other sales guy. It really is his loss. In sure there are plenty of people who order a truck and back out, but this is the new 2016, right? These things are practically selling themselves, right? Why would ANY dealer not want to have some 2016 stock on thier lot this early in the game?

This guy was trying to get you by the balls so you'd end up paying too much for the truck.

I wouldn't purchase a vehicle from a dealer that wanted a deposit. But I wouldn't get upset about it either. Maybe I'm mistaken in taking the OP's tone as upset, but his 2nd sentence is "Fuck him, that is bullshit..."

    Age 26.

If they want a non-refundable deposit I'd require my OTD price upfront. Don't let them pigeon hole you. They want the guaranteed sale as soon as it arrives. Make them do the deal.

Get it in writing. If you know you want it and get the deal you're comfortable with, I'd have no problem with non-refundable.
