Dealer I ordered from only wanted a couple hundred bucks to prove I was serious about ordering the truck. But they were probably the best dealer I've ever dealt with.

If you want them to hold a truck for you - to refuse other customers standing in front of them with cash in hand - they're going to need something of yours in their hands.

If you can't understand that, I don't know what to tell you. It's just business. You aren't anymore special than the dozen other people who will buy that truck the day it hits the lot.

    You're joking right?
You want them to hold a high demand vehicle for you, under the presumption that you will be buying it, while providing no form of commitment on your part?
What makes you so entitled to that? You realize that they could turn away 5 people with cash in hand because you have a "dibs" on it, then you pull out and they missed all of those sales...

Forget that...it IS total BS. One guy tried to tell me that he would not accept a deposit unless I was 100% sure that I wanted the truck. I told him that if these things are as hot as he says, they can sell the truck in a second if I didn't want it. He thought a moment about it, and then agreed to take the deposit and make it contingent on a test drive. If you point out that their logic makes no sense, you usually can win.

They're trying to commit a sale. Which is (gasp) what sales does.

Tell them no, and they'll either say thanks - or most likely, renegotiate to earn the business.

It isn't rocket science. Or something to complain about.

I noticed with my kids that the "it's unfair" conversations ended around puberty. They now take responsibility for their own actions.

    Just sayin.

i don't see the problem in wanting a nonrefundable deposit if you are comitting to buy the vehicle as soon as it comes in,

if not, then you can wait and see what you like when they start sitting on the lot

I don't have an issue with a non refundable deposit if the OTD price has been negotiated. I gave $500 to ensure the truck that comes in is mine and the price is done. however I want to make sure the dealer has the truck they claim they have. If they screw up or bait and switch I am entitled to my deposit back as the implied contract (OTD Price on signed buyers order) has been voided.

What if your truck magically comes in with a few added accessories and they now want you to pay for them? Say to the tune of $2k more? Still interested in that non-refundable deposit?

That voids the original price agreed to. In my case because SET loves adding Mop and Glow to the sticker, I specifically ordered the truck with specific options and nothing more. The dealer has sent me an email claiming the truck I ordered is "now in their inventory" and will be here mid October supposedly.

The only time I have every put a deposit down was on my terms because it was the last 4x4 of that model year left on the lot. There wouldn't be another one delivered new. I offered a $500 deposit and negotiated terms before giving my card number. Told them if anything was off I'd walk. They were very honest and will probably earn my business again next time. When I arrived my truck was out front and ready for me to go in and sign everything and drive off. No BS no non-refundable anything. Wouldn't work for them anyway.

i'm under the assumption an otd the price is already agreed upon, kind of like acquiring a current model vehicle that they simply don't have in stock, some kind of comittment is necessary,

eg. if i went to the dealer and told them to get me a 2015 trd pro in white, just so i can look at it.... how would that go over?

So if it came in and you saw that they had added something would you buy it or would you wait say another 6-8 weeks for a new Taco?

If the price has been negotiated already, then I don't see a problem. If you don't want to put it down, then don't.

if they added something, and you've already agreed on the price, they can honor that price, or you can choose to walk.....on those "terms" i think a non-refundable deposit is refundable because they weren't able to honor the deal

I wouldn't trust a dealership anyways. After I signed the papers for mine, the salesman says you're lucky you came in today, this one had a deposit on it from a guy that had ordered it in. He said first come first serve. I was glad I got it, but if I had known earlier I would have taken the MGM that wasn't ordered
