Just brought my tacoma in for an oil change and airbag recall. Service advisor came out and said my truck failed the airbag recall and they can't give my truck back due to back ordered parts. Forced me to take a loaner.

Just a heads up if you don't like feel having toyota seize your truck.

Mine is a 2023 trail edition.

It's a safety concern. Knowing that your truck requires airbag replacement, they'd be liable if you get into an accident, and caused injury/death when/if the airbag did not deploy.

Would you rather sign a release of liability knowing you have a defective explosive device sitting in your face? Toyota might have just saved your life…be grateful. What loaner did you get?

Toyota has no legal authority to "seize" your truck. They were forceful about keeping it because it's a safety issue for you and a potential liability for them if they knew your airbags were defective, gave you the truck back, and you had an accident. If you had pushed the issue they would have given you back your truck, most likely in return for signing a waiver of liability.

That said, why would you want to drive a truck that you know could injure you in an accident?

Always call ahead to schedule the appt for recalls for the dealer to order parts. The dealer usually has minimal stock beyond basic consumables like crush washers and fluids.

Did you have a recall notice or notification ahead of showing up? I remember having to drive around for months in my bmw and subaru having to wait for the air bags to be replaced seems strange now things are different.

It's a free way to keep the miles low.:cookiemonster:

You do have the opportunity to say "I need a truck for work, therefore I need a loaner that's equivalent to the vehicle class I own" when that situation pops up.

Clearly they can, there's no option to sign a waiver.

I'm fine with it, again just giving people a heads up.

And again... what kind of loaner? I'm betting something off the used car lot.

They can because you basically took them at their word and allowed it. Had you said I'm calling the police and reporting my car stolen things would have changed. All that said you did the right thing by letting them keep it and driving something safe.

They only can because you gave them permission to hold the truck. They are obviously going to present it in a way that makes it appear there isn’t another option in order reduce their liability in case you drive off in a faulty vehicle and crash. It’s a pretty easy choice to let them hold the truck if they’re giving you a loaner truck to drive for potentially months in the meantime.

Some of y'all must have awful dealers. Every loaner my dealer gave me came off the new car lot. It was usually a lower trim vehicle that wasn't selling, but I was never given a loaner that had it's first oil change. And if it wasn't a truck, they'd always ask up front if it was cool to issue a non similar vehicle.
