This recall was issued back in July exactly three days after I bought my truck. you could not take it in at the time because there was "no fix" at the time.

Maybe my truck used a different part number. It has the tech package with the lane assist BS.

Good point re the fuel. When I discovered the issue with my truck (and was sure they would keep it right then), I topped the tank with 4 gallons of super unleaded and fuel stabilizer, then ran it for a while.

Toyota had my 2nd gen for a week while they replaced my rusted out frame.
They rented me a brand new Frontier.
    It sucked.

My 23 Trail, built in June, does not have this recall. Not sure sure why some do and some don’t.

maybe it’s a part thing and what batch went to what truck. I checked my vin again just now and no recall.

“PLANO, Texas (July 12, 2023) – Toyota is conducting a non-compliance safety recall in the U.S. involving certain 2023 model year Toyota Corolla, Corolla Cross, Corolla Cross hybrid, Highlander, Highlander hybrid, Tacoma, as well as Lexus NX and NX hybrid and RX and RX hybrid and 2024 model year NX and NX hybrid vehicles. Approximately 110,000 vehicles in the U.S. are involved in this recall.

In the affected vehicles, the spiral cable assembly in the steering column may lose its electrical connection on the circuit controlling the driver’s airbag. If this occurs, the airbag warning light will illuminate, and the driver’s airbag may not deploy in a crash. As a result, the vehicle will not comply with certain federal motor vehicle safety requirements and may increase the risk of injury to the driver in the event of a crash”

I don't even like driving past my dealer since last time my truck had to stay there for a few days, they gave me an Altima as a rental lol.

That 4 cylinder/CVT combo is something else.

does everyone remember when cars didn't have air bags and people survived crashes without them, the good old days. Some of us on here even came home from the hospital after being born not in a baby car seat. Lol

    • The average engine produced 100 horsepower or so, less than half the power-to-weight that we are driving today.
    • The national speed limit was 55.
    • The world population was half that it is now, there were 100 million fewer people in the United States as there are now.
    • More importantly, there were 150 million fewer cars on the US roadways as there are now. There were 0.54 passenger cars per capita then, there are 0.88 now.
So... Fewer cars to jockey with, slower traffic, less powerful cars. The chances of collision were low, which is why our entire generation rode in the backs of wagons and trucks with little more than blankets while Mom and dad hotboxed the cab with their Virginia slims. There were other things to worry about than car wrecks. But if there was a collision at highway speed, it very much was deadly. I do remember as a kid passing by one or two, and there was blood pooling on the ground underneath the door sills. The stats back up that antecdote.

Airbags and crumple zones mean that people are hitting walls at damn near 70 and yet many are not only surviving that, there are a few of them that managed to walk away without even taking an ambulance ride. That was unheard of when we were kids. That was the stuff of science fiction. Literally. Even as recently as the movie Demolition Man - go back and watch when he yeets it into the fountain - we can walk away with just a few scratches now. And that scene was dreamt up as fantastical... in 1993. 19fucking93.

The only reason why it was the good old days was because there weren't as many buttholes clogging up space. But car safety? C'mon. We're driving spaceships compared to 1980.

Good thoughts for sure, I know myself I drove many cars made in the 70s and 80s when I was younger (which were around 10 years old or so as well so showing their age).

I had an extinguisher service tech try a similar BS line that he "had to take" an older collectible extinguisher that was no longer serviceable (due to the manufacturer not making parts anymore). Not being able to service it was true but the idea he could steal it...not so much. A legal inquiry changed that "rule" really quick.

I did reach out to Toyota to see the details on how a dealer can refuse to give a vehicle back. Just for my own clarification.

The recall states the airbag light will illuminate if the cable has good bad. My light never came on.
