Dealer Installed Swirl Option

I picked up my fully loaded black TRD Sport 4x4 yesterday, and it unfortunately came with the dealer installed swirl option. Along with the swirls and spider webbing over the majority of the truck there were a few deeper scratches. The dealer had a 3rd party detail shop minimize these while I watched.

This isn't my first new black car, but it's the first non-metallic black in some time. Questions:

    - For others with black Tacomas do you see micro scratches and swirls throughout your paint? I'm not talking a scratch you see from 10', but ones that are apparent up close under sunlight, etc.

    - The detail guy admitted it was pretty bad, but the trade-offs (less clear coat, etc) of fixing were too great (I agree). Besides hammer the dealer on the survey what should I be looking for?

It's really disappointing because this dealer gave me a phenomenal deal and was a pleasure to work with.

    Help me TW!

That sucks, but gloss black will alway have that. If you brush against it while its dirty you will make fine scratches. Ill never own a non metallic colored vehicle ever again because of how they all show scratches (with black being the worst of course).

i would look at other black ones on various lots and see if they are the same. if they look fine and yours is obvious it has a issue then address it ASAP could result in swapping out for another truck.

I never buy a black vehicle for that very reason, and that I live in Phoenix. Rock on Inferno!

There are some minor swirls on my Magnetic Grey TRD OR that I noticed during the first wash in direct sunlight after I had it for two weeks or so. Drives me nuts because I am very picky with paint on everything I own. I will do the paint correction whenever I can get time. The areas are over the driver side door and in the passenger door panel. I guess they don't get proper training on the orbital buffer down in Mexico. I don't think the dealership had a chance to touch it since it was covered in dust and had 3 miles on it when I bought it.

I had mine waxed at a detail shop Tuesday. Wedneday night we had rain and strong wind that blew leaves on the hood so I washed and dried it off with a Absorber drying cloth on Thursday. Today the sun was bright and I could see some fine swirl marks but nothing to concern me as of yet. I doubt mine will see a drying cloth again till March as winter is knocking on the door here in southern Illinois.

I owned a black 1991 Ford Nite back in the day. I had it waxed and buffed out every fall to get rid of the swirl marks. I had it 9 years and it looked just as nice the day I got rid of it as it did the day I bought it.

Detail employees at dealerships like to use silicone based waxes or sprays on black cars/trucks. You would not notice fine swirl marks until you bought the truck and washed it a few times.

I bought my 2015 in Aug and we had a major water ban on and the truck was filthy, I refused to take it unless it was clean and I told them if it was washed with a brush I wouldn't take the truck either I made them hand wash it . I won't let Toyota or Mazda (wife's new car ) wash either of our vehicles because 9 .5 times out of 10.the lot kid is a super pot head and fucks up and washes with a brush. My buddy put a piece of tape on his brand new rams steering wheel and in big letters it said DO NOT WASH and of course it got washed yup with a brush and there were swirls all over it , I'd make the dealer go over your truck again until it looked like it rolled right off the assembly line if not I'd be contacting Toyota direct and explain to them that your unhappy with what's going on

My '99 Prerunner was black, our '07 Acura is black - which is why I don't own a black vehicle now! ;)

    I have a 2014 in blue ribbon.
It may as well be black it shows the swirl marks.
    It shows everything

I'll never buy another dark car after this.

I've had plenty of black cars/trucks with no issue. IMO white cars/trucks look horribly dirtier than black ones. Silver is the best at hiding stuff....

I save drive the truck and enjoy it. The truck won't stay scratch free for long. However, that would be nice!

To answer your question, the black "magnifies" the swirl marks. If I were you, I'd be discussing your concerns/wants with the dealer. It's ultimately your truck, so demand your level of satisfaction. I would take matters into my own hands if the dealer wasn't providing much help and buff it out. You could then clay bar if you'd like and apply the sealant of your choice. This way you'll know/understand the products you're working with to ensure the truck's paint quality lasts.
