Guys I'm trying to get the best possible deal on a 2016. I have seen many people on here post that they are getting around invoice or $500 over. Here's the build sheet. I woild rather wait a couple months than pay close to $40k OTD for a new Tacoma. Thoughts, advice?

The advice is to find another dealer.

Find a different dealer or wait 3 months. If you HAVE to have it right now when it is brand new, the dealer is going to try to rape you. You have to be willing to walk.

    Never bought a vehicle before?

    1. Go to Google Maps
    2. Search "Toyota Dealer"
    3. Start from your house, work outward
    4. Call each dealer, ask for internet sales, tell them what you want, ask their best price. Tell them the other offers. Repeat ~6 times.
    5. Choose the cheapest one after you get a price you are comfortable with, from a guy who isn't a douche.
    6. Be willing to travel to get the truck, or pay to have it delivered. Factor that cost into your comparison.
    7. Own truck.

The car buying experience is such a drag. Can't believe we're stilling having to wheel and deal to feel like we're not getting bent over.

    Good luck.

Seems to me your dealer does not get a lot of allocations so they want maximum value from the few they get. Find a high volume dealer who will sell at invoice to move a vehicle. If dealers sell at invoice they are still making 6% + on the sale plus holdback. Some dealers sell at invoice all day long and make money. Other dealers will sense your immediacy and emotional involvement. They can smell anxiety to buy a specific vehicle. I took a chance selling my 15 before getting a VIN on my order, but I trust my dealer. If they balk or play games when my truck arrives I am prepared to buy another brand I have been working a deal on..

The other thing to take into account is what is it worth to buy a car from just down the street versus hundreds of miles away. My mom bought a car this year and I asked her the same question, she said it was worth $1000 to not have to drive an hour to get 'free' services. The local dealer agreed to a price that was less than $1000 more than the cheapest place so she bought it there.

Make calls, figure out the rock bottom price you can find and see if, with a real quote from a competitor, your local dealer will come off the MSRP.

I concur with most of the advice so far. If you aren't willing to pay that, don't pay it. Walk on the deal and look elsewhere. Try a buying service as mentioned. I used True Car for my wife's subie, and ended up paying under "invoice" and the true car estimate. Four dealers were lowballing each other and themselves. Internet sales guy ended up emailing me that offer we accepted, 1,500 below his own floor guy's price.

I love buying vehicles. I think it's fun to play the games trying to get the lowest price. Take the emotion out of it and realize they are trying to get the most, and you the least. The salesman at the dealer we first visited actually said, "is it unreasonable for me to expect to make some money on the deal!" He played the sympathy card, which pissed me off. I said something like, sure, just not as much as you are trying to make. Then I said at that price, you aren't making any money, just wasted 2 hours of your time, and walked out. I emailed him after we bought from the other dealer, let him know the final sales price, and thanked him for his time.

Probably why all the automakers hate Tesla Motors so much. Take out the army of middlemen and pass those savings on to us.

It all depends on the area. What you call many is actually just a few. It's whatever the market will bare and when do you want it. Everyone usually pays the premium when you go get the bleeding edge of technology or you can wait a year for prices to drop. It depends on your personal urgency. If you are fortunate to find a dealer that will give you invoice+ then congrats. If you have to work for it and travel to get it then you have to decide how much your time is worth. For me, I am paying close to MSRP but I will be driving it away tomorrow. I reserved mine in the beginning of August. and it's just a couple miles from the house.

MSRP = Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price. Hard to call a dealer a thief when he's selling a product for what the manufacturer says it's worth. The supply is low and the demand is probably ramping up by the day. I'm willing to bet that a fair number of dealers will not be all that quick to get into a pissing match with each other until the field inventory is sufficient....and that may take a while....especially if fuel prices remain low. If you don't buy a new Taco sitting on a lot someone else will. Trucks and SUVs are hot right now.

If you know exactly what you want, skip the salesman after the test drive. Go to their website and go through their internet manager. Do the same for other dealers within a reasonable distance. I'd say a 2 hour drive each way is more than worth saving a couple G's.

Also, they'll be more likely to cave at the end of the month, when they have to report their sales numbers. Dunno how much they'll cave for a currently scarce commodity, though. You're going into a total seller's market right now. I'm planning on waiting till after Thanksgiving, when dealers are stocked, and they'll be thinking about year-end sales numbers.

Pretty sound advice IMO. Call each dealer (I prefer email, make a fake one with gmail to
avoid spam), get a price quote & buy the cheapest one.

it wasn't the advice it was the first sentence. How would you like it if you ask me if it was going to rain and I answered is your mother a whore ? could be an honest question but pretty rude to ask but alot of people lack class so it is what it is. Was on this site earlier following a question about a lift and it was the greatest thread I ever saw. OP ask a great and informed question and EVERYONE was awsome with their replies and I bet it helped a ton of people. Sorry we can't all know everything but we learn by asking and don't meed to be belittled or berated because we are trying to learn. To have class ya can't ne an ass !!
