It has as much to do with finding a reasonable dealer/salesman as it does being willing to walk away.

Every dealership within 75 miles of me has stated they aren't moving off MSRP. I need a new truck but they don't have to know that. I know a pretty reasonable salesman at a dealership that said they won't budge. I'm going to straight up say to him I know what the invoice price is and the holdbacks and I'll meet him in the middle from MSRP. Historically he's a reasonable guy and goes for it. But I'm also prepared to deal with the reality I may get stuck paying MSRP or really close to it so mentally and financially I'm prepared.

It sucks because usually I'd walk and never look back but I'm not in a position to do that this time.

Shop around and try different tactics but also be in touch with the reality of the situation. These trucks will sell and a dealership knows it.

Hope you get the truck you want. Right now it all about the money.
As others said, high volume dealers will let em go for less...
but then there are those who gladly gouge the consumer needing it right now!
There isn't a 2016 for miles here in the northeast.
I am sure hype is building and the dealers have there forks ready for the marinating buyers.....
    Patience = good deal

So, I sell bicycles. Expensive ones...not department store. When people come up and open with a line like that, it comes off as incredibly douche and this customer gets written off pretty quick. A line like this right off the bat screams "high maintenance, will never be satisfied, will always haggle on everything, then go purchase somewhere else...not worth the trouble." And we deal with discretionary income...no one comes in NEEDING a bike...so we know that money will indeed go somewhere else when that customer walks out.

The sales guys aren't stupid...well, usually. They all know that you know, just like I know this $10,000 bike can be purchased online for $8,000. Rather than going in and waving your junk around thinking you're gaining an upper hand with exclusive knowledge, just throw out the offer, and work for it a little. If they accept, sweet. Simple and easy. You become a no-BS customer that knows what he wants and everyone is content.

    But that's just my opinion.

    Here's how I would reply:

Thanks for your time, I appreciate your help. My price is $XXX over invoice, and it looks like I'll just have to wait a bit for the new model marketing buzz to settle back to normal.

Please keep me in mind when you are ready to make this deal, I'm ready to buy but I'm also patient!

    Thanks again-

I did something similar with a sales guy that just would not budge off of MSRP when I was shopping for my '14 last summer. He was being a dick about too telling me how he didn't have to deal because they were practically selling themselves. Pissed me off because the sales guy I was originally working with was being flexible, but this other guy (the "manager") was just rude and not looking to deal. I walked, hit up another dealer in town, had the truck I wanted brought in from San Antonio (I'm in Houston) and got it for about 4K under sticker before I threw in a trade-in. A few days later I went back to the first place to get some wheel locks and saw the "manager" in the parking lot. I called him over to say "hi" and to let him know the price I got the truck for. His blank stare was enough for me. He could have had a sale, but wanted to be a hard ass. Too many places around here to settle for that. The guy I bought from was super nice, no-pressure and listened to what I wanted to pay. I will add that if you bank with a credit union you should check to see if they have any agreements in place with local dealerships, similar to the other services mentioned.

Maybe not at an apple store, but you'd be surprised at the deals you can get at other places. No one ever thinks to ask on this type of stuff though.

So hard to get a good deal on these trucks. Dealers know that if you don't buy it there will be another person right behind you. Tacomas are in high demand.

It's not douchey, it's reality. I know they mark up the price, I know they get residuals from the manufacturer. They know it too. They will make their money either way. It's how greedy they want to be. I'm acknowledging I know they want to make the most money and I want to pay as little as possible. So instead of doing the song and dance just meet in the middle. I save some money and they still make money.

If you actually read everything I typed you'd know It's the complete opposite of high maintenance. It's putting it all out in the open from the beginning. Why beat around the bush for an hour when we can get to the point right up front. I also clearly stated the dealership can still be firm with MSRP and I'm already prepared for that and will live with it.

    FIFY.

All it takes is patience. Right now, dealers have few Tacos on the lot and they will sell quickly. Wait six months and they will have a ton of Tacos on the lot. Then they will deal.

Why yes it is! Instead of traveling 12 hrs to save a little money there are a number of other things that I could do. I guess each person has to decide how much their time is worth. Apparently you do not think very highly of yourself. The issue here is that each person has their own threshold. You shouldn't condemn a person wanting something now and paying fair "market" value or waiting 6 months to see if the price is cheaper. I know I could wait and possibly get the truck at 500 over invoice or I can get it now from a dealer thats close and pay MSRP. Most dealers in the area are MSRP at this time with the exception of San Diego Toyota who is asking 500 over MSRP. Quite a few that are offering invoice + are scheduling the builds for October or later. You go to buy one that pulls into the lot today and I wager there's not much wiggle room on the price.

Most dealers in my area are saying MSRP. It's the name of the game right now. Pay that extra couple grand and be the first, or wait a couple months and save a couple G's.

Average hourly charge for a professional in any field around here is about $140/hour. That doesn't mean I make $140/hour. That's just what an average company can charge for someone like me to be available for the service I provide. $100/hour is cheap.

This is the same argument for installing parts yourself. Sure, if you have the free time, the time is basically free. However if you're busy, you can basically plug in your time as whatever you are worth in the open market (For me, that'd be closer to $175/hour but I obviously don't make anything close to that) and use that for any value calculations. After all, each hour I could be out working is worth that much so if I'm deferring work to play around on my truck I should value the time accordingly.

    This isn't a new concept.

If you work at McDonalds I could see why your value yourself at $15/hour. If not, you are likely worth much more than that.

As for OP's question he has tons of good advice. Either play the waiting game with a little wheeling and dealing with the local dealership or go elsewhere in search of a better price. Internet sales people are much more likely to go to a lower price, as has been mentioned.

I am friends with a Ford dealer who just gives me invoice plus $500 cash back (it's his little gift to my wife that makes her feel better than just taking it off the invoice.) With Toyota I lucked out and my ex-wife was a salesperson. I gave her a crazy low number. She accepted it. Then again, she was internet sales... and was fired about 2 weeks later lol.

    Too few to list.
At least most dealers are doing MSRP. I remember some cars that I've looked at in the past, they use to add a premium (I've seen up to $5k) on top of the MSRP for new models.

Meh. I was pricing 2014 a year ago. Dealerships said that they didn't need to deal, Tacomas sell themselves. I think the shortage will end but the demand will remain.

Demand is there, but it's not exceeding supply historically. Just find the right dealer.

Just because there's a lot of suckers, doesn't mean you need to become one to compete.
